10 Reasons to Put Off Upgrading Your Mac to OS X Lion
OS X Lion (v10.7) is the latest Apple operating system for Mac computers, but there is some debate over whether there is any pressing need to upgrade right away. Apple says the system boasts 250 improvements, but many are superficial, and other “improvements” may not be viewed as such by owners of older Macs. In addition to just waiting for some bugs to be ironed-out, many users could lose access to favored programs with an upgrade. Below are some reasons folks might want to drag their feet a little before buying into the Lion.
- He Who Hesitates – In this case, he-or-she who hesitates may not be lost at all. There have been reports of glitches in the system that require updating or work-arounds, problems that may be rectified before patient people purchase. There are several free apps that are still scrambling to deliver upgrades to their software to make it compatible with the Lion.
- Snow Leopard – Early results do not demonstrate any great advantage to be gained by upgrading the operating system from Snow Leopard to Lion, though there may be tangible improvement in Photo Shop.
- 30 Bucks is 30 Bucks – Unless you are already in the market for a new Mac, in which case the Lion is free, upgrading will cost $30.
- Rosetta Stone Dropped – Snow Leopard allowed for a manual installation of Rosetta software, but Lion doesn't support it at all, which means Lion dropped support for all PowerPC apps.
- If it Ain't Broke. . . – A lot of people have been quite satisfied with their present system, and Lion may not offer enough in the way of technological advances to make it worth getting.
- Installation Time – If the customer hasn't just purchased a Mac, installation time on older machines can run to two-hours or more.
- Adobe Flash – In the new operating system, as opposed to Snow Leopard, Adobe Flash Player is no longer a default installation, but needs to be installed manually.
- Front Row – The Front Row media center software has been dropped, and this will affect older Apple Macs, though there have been reports that the software can be installed on Lion with a bit of hacking.
- File-Sharing Problems – Networking and file-sharing issues have come up, such as Macs not sharing with Windows, and even with problems involving Macs not sharing with other Macs.
- Older Hardware – Lion will only support newer Mac hardware, which means that most Intel powered Macs won't work with Lion; there has been grumbling that this was done deliberately to force people to buy new machines.
Eventually, after the entire system is smoothed out and after the glitches have been fixed, there may be enough in those 250 improvements to warrant the upgrade, but there doesn't appear to be any great call to rush out and get a Lion, unless people just have to be the first one on the block to have the newest toys.

>Rosetta Stone Dropped
No, actually "Rosetta" has been dropped. "Rosetta Stone" is a completely unrelated piece of educational software.
>Lion will only support newer Mac hardware, which means that most Intel powered Macs won't work with Lion
This is also not correct – Only the very early intel Macs with 32bit processors (Core Duo/Core Solo) can't run Lion. Most of these machines would now be close to 5 years old at this point. The Core Duo MacBook Pros were only available for a few months prior to the Core 2 Duo (64Bit) machines being released. The correct statement would be that "most Intel powered Macs will work with Lion".
I personally don't see a reason to upgrade to Lion until a couple of point releases have fixed the glitches, but this article was not particularly well researched.
I'm usually reluctant to install "point oh oh" of any OS due to the "glitches" usually present in the first release (as noted in reason 1), but most of the other "reasons" noted by the author are absurd and pointless. The article sure seems a waste of space.
Adobe Flash – In the new operating system, as opposed to Snow Leopard, Adobe Flash Player is no longer a default installation, but needs to be installed manually.
I think this list was stretched too much when I read that. You might as well have said something like "Microsoft Office is not included and it will cost you 199$ to get it". Basically, installing Flash is a non issue.
It's "Photoshop" not "Photo Shop" and "Rosetta" not "Rosetta Stone"
What a dreadfully written article by someone who has no idea what they are talking about. This is basically a list of forum troll gripes.

The folks over at Tapbots have released an update to their Twitter client for the iPhone and iPod touch. http://www.itube-stream.de.tl This update adds a couple of useful features. One of these features gives you the ability to add sleep time for its push notifications. This allows you to set a block of time to turn off notifications from Twitter so that you can sleep easy and uninterrupted. Another useful feature is the ability to only receive notifications from people that you follow. Thirdly, have you ever reported a spammer or blocked someone and had to live with the fact that their tweets were still polluting your timeline? http://www.anysim.net Well fret no mo because once you block or spam someone with this new update, their tweets will be automatically removed.
“Adobe Flash – In the new operating system, as opposed to Snow Leopard, Adobe Flash Player is no longer a default installation, but needs to be installed manually.”
and this is a bad thing???
This is a terrible article. I tend to ignore Macapper in my RSS feeds but couldn’t remember why. Decided to read this article. It’s a waste of space. Half of the gripes were non-issues (who is complaining about having to instal Flash manually?) and some were downright wrong. Lion DOES work with most Intel Macs. We only had Core Duo Intel processors for a few months before switching to Core 2 Duo processors here at Apple. The Core Duos run at 32 bits (not compatible with Lion) and the Core 2 Duos run at 64 bits (compatible). You’ll be hard pressed to find very many people still running a Core Duo Intel Mac these days. They might as well be running a PowerPC computer.
Dropping Rosetta support is a good thing. If Apple kept every bit of old technology around indefinitely, the OS would be a horribly bloated and slow-moving bit of software indeed. Anyone still running PowerPC apps are running software that is at least 6 years old. It’s time to cut the umbilical cord for that older software and time for them to upgrade.
Now I do agree with the other posters and just the basic principal of new software releases. Reference releases are always buggy by nature. Waiting for a couple .x.x releases before upgrading is always a good way to go.

Got myself a new MacBook Pro when Lion came out. Unfortunately the hard drive needed to be replaced and the authorizes dealer reinstalled Snow Leopard instead. And I must say I’m happy with that as quite a few softwares just didn”t work with Lion.
I’m surprised that Lion has so many issues going on. I’ll be more than happy to update at a much later date …
I have been using OS X Lion since the early developer releases and have had no regrets at upgrading. I have it installed on a relatively old 2009 MacBook Pro as well as two iMacs and have no major problems, in fact I was impressed with its speed from the first release.
Like all new releases there are bound to be problems and bugs. The 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 updates have both moved things forward and added the iCloud service.
I use Leopard, and my unibody MacBook Pro still runs like the first day even with all the crap that I´d installed.
If I ever switch it would be to Snow Leopard, but never to Lion, I know that in many aspects Lion is a step back. Recently more and more software and apps require 10.6 and that would be the only reason to upgrade. But for now I´m more than satisfied.
