Ever wanted to grab some songs off a friends iPod and put them onto your computer? Apple makes this difficult, by renaming all the files in the music folder of your iPod and placing them in obscure sub-directories (blame the record companies). This is where Senuti comes into play. Despite the odd name (iTunes spelled backwards), it's a very useful little app.

Senuti displays the contents of your iPod in an iTunes-esque interface, showing your playlists and your iPod library. It then gives you the option to either export the songs of your choice from your iPod to a folder on the computer, or directly into the iTunes library. Senuti will also detect duplicate songs if you already have them in the iTunes library and either skip the track, rename it, or overwrite it.

Senuti can also copy across the track's artwork so you can have those too. Playlists from the iPod can also be exported and you can export directly to a playlist within iTunes instead of directly into the library. Perfect for giving someone that mix you worked hard on.

I have the DMG file stored on my iPod, so if I'm at a friend’s place and they want some of my songs, I can install it on their machine and dump all the music over. Every iPod owner should have this on their iPod, just in case.

Get Senuti now from Fadingred.org, where it’s fantastically free!

By default, QuickTime (and other apps like Front Row and iMovie that use its underlying technology) doesn’t support many video formats. In particular, those *cough* legal *cough* videos that you download using BitTorrent are usually encoded in XviD or DivX. Sure, you can use VLC to watch these types of videos, but if you want to view them in Front Row, or import it into iMovie for editing, you need the proper codecs.

Traditionally you had to scour for these codecs all over the Internet; and when worst came to worst, you’d have to resort to manually compiling them from the source code. Thankfully, Perian comes to the rescue by bringing all these codecs in an easy to use installer packaged into a single download.

Once you’ve downloaded Perian, it will install a new icon in your System Preferences. You can choose to either install it for your own user account or for the entire system, so everyone can use it. Under System Preferences, you can adjust the audio output. Perian has the necessary codecs to drive more than stereo speakers, so those with 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound setups will be able to enjoy great quality audio.

You can also remove Perian via the System Preferences if you wish. For a full list of the codecs Perian supports, visit their website. It’s quite comprehensive, supporting virtually everything except Windows Media. For Windows Media support, you’ll need to download Flip4Mac, as Perian only installs open source codecs.

Get your free copy of Perian today!

Ever been in a situation where you needed to know the specs of an old Apple machine? Or even your current machine? MacTracker is a slick database of Apple equipment dating back to the very first Mac.

The amount of detail in the specification of each machine is amazing. Details like dimensions, internal product code-names, release dates, the OS it shipped with, expansion ports, RAM capacity and even a blurb on it's original price plus images of the machine are included.

It even goes so far as to provide a startup chime for every machine Apple has ever made and the death chimes for those that had it (the Mac II is my favourite). MacTracker also contains a Smart Folder-like option, where you can specify criteria for a search, e.g. all models with a 68000 CPU.

It's saved me several times when I needed to know a specific type of RAM an older Mac uses. Plus, it's also fun to reminisce about old machines we've used. MacTracker also contains detailed information on obscure items, like the Apple Quicktake camera, the Apple printer and scanner range, as well as the Newton PDAs.

MacTracker is regularly updated when new stuff comes out, and even has a feature to report potential mistakes or the accuracy of the info. Al in all it’s a brilliant app which showcases the devotion of Mac users to their platform.

Head on over to the MacTracker website and download it for free. There’s even a version for your iPod – super handy if you’re out in the field and need Mac specs quickly.

Rogue Amoeba has been a favorite developer of mine for quite a while. Apps like Audio Hijack and Airfoil have proved immensely useful for me over the years. Their latest release is Fission, another slick app that joins their stable of audio related tools.

Fission makes it brain-dead easy to chop and slice audio for whatever purpose. The commands are straightforward and the beauty of Fission is that it can edit MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless and AIFF with no loss of quality. In some programs, you need to convert an MP3 to a WAV or AIFF file, then edit and re-compress. Not so in Fission, which translates into excellent quality audio.

It’s ideal for situations where you want to split a long MP3 up into multiple files, as you can chop your file up at once in Fission, and then export the sections you've created into individual files. Perfect for live concerts or radio shows.

Creating ringtones from your favourite songs is also a cinch with Fission, saving you the hassles and dangers of scouring dodgy websites, or even paying a dubious source for a 10 second tone. This sort of stuff can easily done in other apps (even free apps) like Garageband or Audacity, but Fission's simplicity and lossless MP3 editing puts it in a class of it’s own.

It’s ease of use makes it a dream for any novice, or even something quick and simple for the pro who just needs to get things done. Fission is available for US$32, although a full feature demo is available. However, the quality of audio saved with the demo will be degraded with a series of audio fades.

However, if you want an even easier way to add to-dos, High Priority brings that to your menu bar.

To-do lists are the center-point of any productive person, and iCal makes this pretty easy. With a simple click, or keyboard shortcut, you can easily view your to-dos and have real-time feedback on their status.

High Priority 1.11 is also thankfully now compiled as a universal binary.

Items can be removed and added from the menu with a keystroke, as well as invoking the menu itself, so you can have full keyboard control of your to-dos. Tasks that are close to being overdue can be highlighted so you get to them sooner, and High Priority also interacts with iCal's to-do list, so you don't double up on tasks. Even the colors you use for your to-do’s in iCal can be used in High Priority so you can associate them easier. A simple application that's cheap (only US$6, but when used unregistered, does everything except let you add new tasks) and does what it says and can increase your productivity with ease. You can grab High Priority here.
