Stomp is a very useful application that allows you to re-encode videos, crop them, add effects and even more. Shinywhitebox is a software company from New Zealand that has already created two apps: iShowU, a screen recording tool, and Chatter, a screensharing tool.

Last November Shinywhitebox released Stomp. Stomp is a very useful application that allows you to re-encode videos, crop them, add effects and even more. Shinywhitebox is a software company from New Zealand that has already created two apps: iShowU, a screen recording tool, and Chatter, a screensharing tool. Today they released the 1.6 version of Stomp; let’s see in more detail what this application is capable of.

Stomp has two main features : re-encoding and effects.

The first feature allows you to re-encode a video in a different format. The application includes a lot of different presets from Apple TV to YouTube, but you can also choose your own settings for both video and audio, and even create your own presets.

The second main feature of this application is the addition of effects, known as filters in Stomp. Indeed, you can add different effects to your video such as blur, starshine, bump distortion… But what’s even better is that you can apply several effects to one video. Also, all the effects are customizable and they’re also previewable so that you know what the final result will look like.

Stomp is very easy to use; its one-window interface is very easy to understand and you can get started in one minute. Just select the filters you want to apply to your video, choose the encoding preset and click the process button. The progress bar will show you the status of the conversion.

Stomp features several other tools that are very handy if you edit videos. For example, you can crop a video – you just have to select the area you want to keep and Stomp will crop it. You can also resize a video or change the FPS rate.

Another nice feature is the Growl integration that notifies you when one of your processes is done, so that you don’t have to check every 3 minutes to see if your movie is compressed or if you still have to wait 45 seconds.

Finally, one of my favorite functions is the batch editing that allows you to apply the same modifications to a list of video.

You can download Stomp from Shinywhitebox, and it costs $29.95, or $22.16 if you have a license of iShowU.

Shinywhitebox has agreed to give away 1 license of Stomp. To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment on how would Stomp be useful to you.

A new version of DrawIt, an easy-to-use, powerful image editing and drawing application, was recently released. This new version brings some new features to the table but the main change is the interface which has now been completely overhauled. At its heart DrawIt is an image editing and drawing application that features vector and bitmap editing tools and a non-destructive editing mode.

As mentioned, the interface has been totally redesigned with some help by Laurent Baumann and sometimes reminds me of the look of Finder. Take a look below.

There is a new attributes panel that has been simplified and can now be collapsed. Overall the entire interface has also been simplified – styles and filters are merged and are now both known as Effects. So now all the styles such as stroke, shadow and opacity, and filters like blur are now in the same category. You can also define default effects for your layers. Even more useful is that you can now create Favorite effects so that you don’t have to create that effect you liked over and over. Finally, this version also introduces a plug-in system that allows you to create your own effects.

The icon also changed for people who care about stuff like that – it was a box of crayons and is now a drop of paint. It is, as you would expect, available in a 512×512 format for Leopard.

DrawIt costs $49 and a demo version is available for download at DrawIt’s website (but be warned as it annoyingly watermarks images).

The 3.1 version of NetNewsWire, the well-known RSS reader, has just been released. Along with new features, such as a new view mode, HTML archiving, and performance enhancements, the major change in this new version is that the application is now totally free.

Newsgator, the company that bought the application decided to drop the paid model for a totally free model. This application which used to cost $30, is now totally free. The Lite version of NNW has suitably disappeared but note that people who purchased NetNewsWire in the past 30 days are entitled to a refund.

But this new version also brings other welcome changes which I mentioned above. First, the interface has been updated and now has some new toolbar icons. There is also a handy new feature I really like: HTML Archiving – so yeah you can now archive articles by saving them as HTML files. Useful too: the possibility of selecting several news items and execute actions for all of these items such as flag, mark as read, etc.

Finally, my favorite feature included in this new release is the new combined view. This new view mode includes a pagination system so you don’t have to scroll so much. I noticed only 20 news items (you can change that number) are displayed and if you want to see the next or previous ones, you simply have to change the page.

NetNewsWire can be downloaded for free on NewsGator’s website.

This new version adds better Leopard integration and some cool new features such has Global Search.

The new user interface now matches Leopard’s look. It also fixes the graphical bugs that were present with the last version when running on Leopard.

This version brings the long awaited Global search feature: you can now search through all of Wallet’s categories, not only the one you’re currently viewing. Sparkle automatic software update has also been added which is now the standard for updating most Mac applications. The new version also does away with popups for the lock view and instead is integrated into the application window.

You can now also choose to install or uninstall the Dashboard widget (which allows you to find an entry very quickly) directly from the preference pane. Wallet costs $14.95 and a demo version is available from Waterfall Software.

This new version of the popular timeline application brings a lot of new features to the table, and the completly redesigned user interface actually makes the app much easier to use.

A bulk edit mode allows you to create a timeline by entering events in a table. Support of images has also been added; you just have to drag and drop an image on a selected event and it’s added to your timeline. You can also now create multiple event rows which is great if you want to compare two parallel actions. Here is an image of the reworked interface to demonstrate.

Another great addition is better integration with OS X. You can now search your timelines with Spotlight, preview them with QuickLook, and share them via iChat. This version also brings many new themes. One of the best parts of this new version is integration with the iApps. You can automatically create a timeline with your recently played iTunes tracks, iPhoto photos, iCal calendars, or even the birthdays of your contacts in Address Book.

Timeline 2 costs $40 and is a free update for existing users. You can download a free trial version from Bee Documents.

If you want to enter more details about a to-do, you just have to double-click on it and it will be opened by Mail or iCal so you can add more details. You can switch between your lists by choosing the one you want at the top of the window. Anxiety is very well integrated with OS X; you can synchronize your to-do lists with iCal and Mail so you can easily transfer them to other devices such as an iPhone or an iPod. By using Calendar Store, a calendar database integrated into Leopard, Anxiety permanently syncs your to-dos with iCal and Mail. You can modify, add, or delete a task in Anxiety, Mail or iCal and the modification will be present in all three applications.

Another great point of Anxiety is its user interface. The look is the same as a HUD panel so it is completely integrated into the system. It’s very minimalist and clean, but this simplicity makes this app beautiful and enjoyable to use.

The interface has another great quality; its simplicity. Moreover, there are many ways to access this app; you can have it in your menubar or in your dock. You can also choose to have it permanently on screen which is great if you always want to look at your to-dos. You can control much of the app’s appearance in the preferences; the maximum number of list rows, the elements you want in the footer, etc.

One of the best features of Anxiety is its price; it is completely free. You can download it at the developers website.

The focus of the application is to provide easy but powerful image editing . Recently, Pixelmator’s team released the first 0.x update of the application: version 1.1, codename Kitten. This new version brings a lot of new features such as graphic tablet support, a QuickLook plugin and many new filters.

The new graphic tablet feature brings support for pressure sensitivity. This is a great news for digital painters or anyone else who uses a graphic tablet for editing or creating images. This new version also brings over 80 new filters including ASCII Art, Blue Print, Kaleidoscope, Line Overlay, Neon, Comic Book, and Pop Art. Third-party filter support was also added which is great news – meaning you can now create your own filters, with Quartz Composer and use them in Pixelmator.

Finally, my favorite addition to Pixelmator is the Quick Look plugin. It allows you to preview more than 100 image file formats without having to launch any applications. If you want a powerful but easy image editing program, but are daunted by the price or complexity of Photoshop or the Gimp respectively, I would highly recommend Pixelmator.

Two weeks back, Reinvented Software released the second version of Together, an application to manage your documents.

Together 2.0, previously known as K.I.T. (Keep It Together), brings a lot of new features such as a widescreen mode, an improved search, Leopard support and the Shelf: a side-panel available in every application.

At its heart Togeher is a files manager, much like Yojimbo. It allows you to manage all kind of files (images, videos, texts, or even links), so that you know where they are. It also allows you to create folders to keep your files organized and, for example, regroup files that are used for the same goal. You can edit text right in Together so you don’t have to open an external editor.

Updated UI
The User Interface has also been overhauled a bit; with the sidebar now looking more like the Finder’s sidebar. This sidebar has two views: Groups and Tags. Groups is a Finder-like view divided into three parts: Library, where you can browse your items by category; Groups, where you can add folders and intelligent folders; and Trash). The Tag view display all the tags you created and indicates how many items are tagged for each. You can easily switch between the Groups or Tags views just by clicking a button situated in the bottom right corner.

The Shelf
The Shelf is a side-window that is, when inactive, a tab on the side of your screen. But when you drag something on this tab (or hit a shortcut), the side-window expands showing Together’s sidebar; you can drag your selection wherever you want. As soon as you release your mouse button, your selection will be added to Together. The Shelf also allows you to create quick notes.

Improved Search
The search feature has been improved; this new version introduces a search bar so that you can choose where you want to search, and the type of your search (in comments, tags, name, label, etc.). The search feature also uses Spotlight, and I noticed that search speed is faster compared with previous versions.

Other new features

Preview now uses QuickLook to preview documents that aren’t supported by Together.

A new view-mode is also available: Portrait (widescreen view).

Another great feature in this application is the Library manager that allows you to create several Libraries, and to easily switch between them. Useful if you want to separate personal items and business items.

Together 2.0 costs $39, and the upgrade from previous versions costs $14.95. A 15 Day trial is also avilable from Reinvented Software.

Long-awaited CandyBar 3 has just been released by Panic.
CandyBar is an application that lets you customize your system icons like the folders, the trash, the drives… Pixadex was an application to organize and browse your icon library. By fusing both applications together, you can not only customize your icons, but also manage them in the same application, which is very handy. In the process of merging those two great apps, Panic Inc decided to change its user interface.

CandyBar also supports 512×512 icons, and the possibility to customize the dock, which is an awesome feature to me, as I’m not fond of the default dock style. You’ll also notice that the speed and smart collections have been improved. This version brings Quick Look support; you can now preview iContainers in the Finder. CandyBar 3 also includes a built-in icon set called Float.

CandyBar costs $29 for new buyers; $24 for owners of Pixadex 2 or CandyBar 2 and $19 for owners of both Pixadex 2 and CandyBar 2. Check out the 15-days/250-icon limit trial version from Panic Inc.

Version 1.7 of Yummy FTP, which is – obviously – an FTP client, has just been released by Yummy Software. This application is well-known for its file uploading speed compared to other existing applications.

This new version brings to the application Leopard support and built-in Quick Look functionality, among other enhancements.

Yummy FTP claims to be the fastest FTP client for Mac on the market. In fact, the developer indicates that Yummy FTP is not only faster than other FTP applications like Fetch, Transmit or Interarchy, but it also uses far less CPU cycles. Indeed, they’re 4 times faster than Fetch for transferring 385 files, because it uses only 10% of the CPU, whereas Fetch uses 60% and Transmit clocks in at 100%.

Yummy FTP also has plenty other great features such as :

Failure auto-recovery

Finder FTP uploads

Auto-upload folders

Directory synchronization

Scheduling

My favorites are the Dock Menu (to execute actions quickly without opening the window) and spell-checking in the editor which is very useful. This new release of Yummy FTP brings full-compatibility with Leopard along with ergonomic enhancements to match Leopard’s style. It also adds a very nice feature: QuickLook. Just like Leopard’s Finder, you can now have a preview of remote files in a blink, just by tapping the spacebar. Very useful if you don’t remember what contains a file you uploaded.

Yummy FTP costs $25, although a 30-day trial version is available.

So now Cha-Ching runs properly on Leopard and the transition between the 1.1.1 version and the 1.1.2 doesn’t cause any trouble (at least, I didn’t see any problem but backup your database which is in your Application Support folder if you’re paranoid).
Finally this version adds changes to the icon – the coins have MidnightApps’ logo (a moon) on them, and the icon is available in 512×512. Delicious.

The developer also mentioned the fact that the next release will be 2.0, but he wanted to keep the new features secret. Maybe we’ll get lucky and Juan will leak some tidbits here or other places in the coming weeks.

For now Cha-Ching is available at MidnightApps’ website, costs $40 and a 15 -days demo is available to see if it is for you.

On October 29th MiraSoftware announced that BluePhoneElite was finally out of beta and available for purchase. BluePhoneElite 2 is the new version of BluePhoneElite, an application to manage your cell-phone. We have never reviewed BluePhone here and I am not sure why as it is quite an amazing accessory for busy mobile users.

This new retail version brings a lot of new features to the table such as SMS management when the cell-phone isn’t connected, a new plug-in architecture, better OS X integration, and much more.

Installation
If you haven’t already guessed, the communication between your cell phone and the computer is done via Bluetooth, so you don’t need any wires. Adding a phone is very easy, you just have to go to the preferences and make sure that your computer and your cell phone both have bluetooth turned on, and pair them accordingly.

SMS Management
The first main function of BPE2 is to manage your SMS messages. Indeed, you can read, send and archive text messages on your Mac. The function I found the most useful is the possibility to delete several SMS in one click, you select them, hit delete and blammo, they’re gone. On your phone, aside from mass deleting SMS, most of the time you have to delete messages one at a time – whcih is a pain. Here it’s very fast. When writing a message, there is a word counter so that you know how many characters are remaining before the SMS limit. Another good point is the search bar – you can search your messages, so you don’t have to read them one by one to find what you want.

Call Management
The second main function of BPE2 is to manage calls. You can call someone from you computer, answer a call from the computer, and see the history of all your calls. So if you’re working on your computer and don’t want to have to find your cell phone when someone is calling you, BPE2 is the perfect accessory for you. Another thing I liked is that BPE2 features incoming call notification with caller ID and customizable alerts, so you can easily screen calls.

Compatibility
For the most part BPE2 is compatible with a lot of recent cell phones. Of course not all phones are supported but definitely many are. Having said that, for iPhone owners this application is limited because it “works only as a talk-thru device”.
