Master Kick: Review and Giveaway

LogoIt seems like every medium has tried to recreate the world’s most popular sport. There’s the interactive table version of soccer, called foosball. And then there are tons of soccer video and computer games that try to realistically imitate the sport. However, few computer games have attempted to emulate the look and feel of table soccer, but that’s exactly what’s been done with Master Kick. And there’s one really good reason why it might be a better alternative: a decent foosball table can cost more than $100, but you can get Master Kick free if you win MacApper’s giveaway.

Mountain Tanks: Scorched Earth Fans Rejoice!

mtlogo.pngIf you are a fan of turn-based strategy games, this may seem simplistic to you. If you feel that most turn-based games have too many variables to worry about, then this may well be for you. And if you like to blow stuff up, then this is definitely for you!

Mountain Tanks is simple to learn. The objective is straight-forward: destroy your opponent’s cities before they destroy yours. For those who remember the early 90’s artillery game Scorched Earth, this will bring back fond memories, and there are strong similarities between the two games. And, one can hope, there are some features the devs will implement in future versions. For now, here’s how it goes down…

Retro-Gaming with Neon Tango

LogoBack in the early 80’s, before Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Grunge music and cable television, there existed a paradise of electrons and buttons and beeps. It was a haven where even the dorkiest kid could get some props for beating the high score. For those of us who spent our formative years dropping thousands of quarters into machines at the local arcade, there is a new game that will bring back the romantic days of the twitch-fest.

5 Fun Free Mac Games (you’ve never heard of)

Free Mac GamesEveryone likes to kill some time playing a computer game every once in a while. Why not today? I think the lack of Mac games is actually a positive thing: it forces us to become casual gamers, and because of this, we tend to appreciate the time spent playing games more than hardcore PC gamers.

I have compiled a list of five games you probably have never heard of. All the games are playable even on a low-end MacBook and more importantly, simply fun! So log out of your Facebook account, shut down that e-mail client and do your brain a favor by getting your game on.

Play StarCraft and Diablo II on your Mac

Play Older Classic Blizzard Games on MacNo one really knows how long until the futuristic real-time strategy game StarCraft II is released, but you can bet it won’t be any time soon. Developer Blizzard Entertainment is notorious for taking its time intricately crafting epic story arcs and balancing multiplayer modes, which would explain how the company has produced some of the most popular computer games ever released.

So while we wait impatiently, why not brush up on the basics by playing the original StarCraft in the mean time?

EVE Online: Now Flying on Mac

Eve Trinity
In May of 2003, the Icelandic game development company CCP released their flagship title: a sci-fi MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online Role-Playing Game) called EVE Online. Now, four years later, EVE Online is one of the largest persistent virtual universes in existence, home to tens of thousands of dedicated players.

And with the release of their new Trinity expansion, this game world is finally open to Mac (and Linux) users everywhere.

Old School Gaming on the Modern Mac with ScummVM

ScummVMScummVM version 0.11.0 (”Your Palindrome”) was released recently for Mac OS X. What is ScummVM you ask? Well, simply put, it is a collection of several gaming engines all wrapped up in a tidy package that enables you to play yesterday’s classic adventure games on today’s modern systems.

Back in the days when DOS still ruled the earth, adventure Games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle captured my imagination, captivated my sense of humor, and challenged my noggin. Characters in adventure games were funny, quirky, and often a little nerdy (I’m looking at you, Bernard). As a future geek myself, it was much easier for me to relate to the affable Guybrush Threepwood than it was to the grim nameless marine of Doom.

Spore Coming to Mac Later this Year

Spore IconOne of the most anticipated simulation games in years will have a place on the Mac when Electronic Arts releases Spore later this year.

EA announced the Mac release at MacWorld last week along with a demo on display at the expo, and it somehow slipped under the radar.

Spore is a simulation game on steroids. Will Wright, the game’s chief designer, is a pioneer in the genre, having developed the city planner’s dream game, SimCity, and the bestselling life simulator, The Sims. Spore lets you craft a universe. From creating life, watching it evolve and building civilizations to customizing entire planets, players have full control.

Galder: Strategy Meets Gem-Matching

Galder IconMacs don’t have many games, I think that’s a fact that we all can agree on but Fastforward Software is changing that with their new game Galder, a gem matching game with a really unique twist unlike any out there!

Gem games are a dime a dozen now and I’m sure most of you are thinking, “What exactly could you do to make a gem game any different that the gem dropping, color matching games of the past?”

Nullriver’s Medialink: Streaming Media from Mac to PS3

MediaLinkHave you ever wanted to easily access your Mac’s media on your PS3? Well now you can. Just a couple days back Nullriver Software, the people behind the hugely popular Connect360, released Medialink. Medialink is an easy to use app that allows you to access your videos, movies, and music on your Mac via your PS3.

Similar to Connect360, Medialink lives in System Preferences. When you open Medialink you can choose exactly what sources you want for sourcing media, like your iTunes library or iPhoto library. Then once you have picked your sources you simply click start and you’re up and away. On the Playstation 3 XMB (XrossMediaBar) you can access all of your selected sources by going under the appropriate sections (Photos, Videos, Music) and selecting the Nullriver Medialink server.

Lugaru: 3D Ninja Fighting Bunnies

LugaruGames aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “Mac.” And it’s true, Macs don’t have many games. By games, for the sake of this post, I’m talking about 3D games, which are not always commercially available. The vareity available on the PC just isn’t there for the Mac. Luckily, there is a wealth of free first-person shooters available based on the Cube and Quake engines (like OpenArena).

However, first person shooters get tiring. Lucky for us, there’s a great shareware game called Lugaru. What’s the premise of Lugaru? Well, basically you’re a rabbit named Turner on the island of Lugaru, and you’re out to avenge your family’s death. Hey, you’ve gotta give them points for creativity!

Runic: Arcade Classic with a NewSkool Twist

RunicPong is a classic arcade game which we’ve all loved an enjoyed. World of Warcraft is an amazing MMORPG with weird goblins, ghouls and crazy creatures. Together the two might make up something called Runic. This game incorporates old-school game play (think Breakout or Arkanoid) with new graphics and wild magic spells and bosses.

I’ve never been much of a gamer, but Runic is a game that really anyone of any age can easily pick up. The game is very simple, with only a mouse and the space bar needed to play. If you remember Arkanoid, the game plays very similar to that. As simple as it is, the concept is not oringal, but it makes up for that with many added enhancements to the gameplay. Here is a look at the game in action, below.
