Final Cut Pro X: What Does the Controversy Mean to You?

You've no doubt heard about Final Cut Pro X by now. About a week ago, Apple discontinued Final Cut Studio, it's line of professional video editing applications which consisted of Final Cut Pro 7, Color, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Compressor 3, and DVD Studio Pro 4. These six applications sold for $1,300 from Apple, and represented a standard in many professional video workflows. While Avid systems have remained the king of Hollywood and larger production agencies, Final Cut Pro and its sister applications were preferred by many for their (relative) ease of use, especially among independent filmmakers.

Apple Purchases iCloud Domain Name.

Earlier on in the week, a source gave GigaOM information stating that Apple has purchased the domain name iCloud.com for $4.5 million. It was assumed that Apple is planning to roll out their new cloud-based music service under that particular name. The original owner of the name have renamed the site CloudMe and redirected visitors who try to navigate to the site using the iCloud domain name.

My source, who is familiar with the company, says that Xcerion has sold the domain to Apple for about $4.5 million. Xcerion hasn’t responded to my queries as yet. At the time of writing, the Whois database showed Xcerion as the owner of iCloud.

Co-Founder of Geek Squad Reports Gas Main Explosion with iPad

TUAW and TwinCities.com have reported that the co-founder of Geek Squad (now currently owned by Best Buy) had reported a gas main explosion with his iPhone and iPad 2 using iMovie.

Once Stephens had captured the source of the explosion, he drove to a nearby parking lot, transferred the footage from his iPhone to his iPad 2 (we recently covered how to do this using Apple’s USB Camera Connection Kit), edited the footage, added a map, subtitle and voiceover describing the incident and finally uploaded the film to YouTube and iReport. Stephens then tweeted (with a few stills) permission for others (including the media) to use the footage and before long his breaking news was getting coverage on CNN and MSNBC.
