So you want to become organized, or at least more organized. You can start by using iCal for events, and maybe iCal or Things for to-dos. But what about one small and lightweight place for both of them? This is exactly what Second Gear’s Today does for us.

First of all, you can use iCal for both to-dos and calendars, but a lot of people (including myself) love Things for to-dos. Today doesn’t actually move any of your to-dos or events to a new library, it just reads the calendars and to-dos already in iCal. You may say, “How can I use Things with Today then?” Well, that part is actually in Things. They have just added the feature of syncing to-dos from Things to iCal and vice versa! Now you can have everything in iCal, which means you can have everything in Today. This is why I personally love Today, and others will, too. And when you use Today to create to-dos, they automatically sync to Things!

Today is a menubar app. It simply sits in your menubar (you can turn this on or off in the General Preference pane). It is a great feature, because then Today can always be open without it bothering you when you don’t want it. You can also have it sit on top of all other windows (when it is open). It has a great Leopard-like menubar icon, too! You just click on the icon in the menubar, and the Today window opens.

As I said above, Today manages both calendars and to-dos. To specify which calendars are synced with Today, you just goto the Calendars tab of the preferences. Since to-dos are actually managed in calendars, you only need to specify which calendars to sync. If you sync your School calender, the to-dos and events in it will sync with Today. In the main window, the to-dos and events are color-coded the way that they are in iCal. So if you are used to iCal, switching to Today will be an easy change.

To add a new to-do to a Calender, you just click the checkbox [+] button at the bottom of the window. It will ask you for a due date, a name, a calendar to add it to, and notes. This is exactly like adding a to-do in Things or iCal. To add a new event, you click the calendar [+] button. You can then specify a name, location, calendar time, and notes. Again, just like in iCal. As I said above, when you add a new to-do, it will sync with Things if you choose to (in the preferences of Things).

Here is the way that I think of how the syncing with iCal and Things works. Things <---> iCal <---> Today. This means that if you add a to-do to Things, it will sync with iCal, which will then sync it with Today. If you add a new to-do to iCal, it will sync to Things and Today. If you add a new to-do to Today, it will sync to iCal, which will sync it to Things. The main point is, no matter where you add a to-do or event, it will get synced everywhere. Well, except the events don’t get synced to Things because Things is for to-dos.

Second Gear (the developers of Today) have been very generous in giving us 5 licenses to giveaway to you! Just post a comment about a feature you would like to see in Today! And remember, Today retails for only $15, and you can download a free trial at their site. It is a perfect tool for keeping track of your events and to-dos in one small application.

Most of us download at least one thing per day. Some of us like the Safari download manager, but for some of us it just isn’t enough. There are some other managers, like Speed Download, but most of us don’t need all of those features. For us, there is Leech.

Leech, by Many Tricks, adds lots of functionality to a download manager without being completely cluttered. It has only a few features, but they are great features. The first thing you may notice is that, unlike other download managers, it doesn’t ask you to install a plugin. This is because it does not intercept downloads; you have to manually add a new URL.* This can be a real pain for those of us who used to use Speed Download or other download managers, but I have gotten used to it. I do only use it for big files, though, or else it would be extremely annoying.

The biggest feature of Leech (in my opinion), is its ability to stop and resume downloads at anytime, unlike the built-in manager in Safari. This is a really helpful feature, especially if you have a laptop, because you may want to put it to sleep and resume a download later. This is a feature in most download managers, but it still should be mentioned.

Leech is extremely easy to use, and the only real options that you need to set up are the preferences. There aren’t that many preferences, but they are very adequate. Some people like all the options that Speed Download has. I can easily see that, but I think you will be surprised at how little options you need to just download files.

The General tab of the preferences provides you with a few options, like where to download to, and how many downloads to do at once. The only weird option here is where the temporary files go (the temporary file for a download is a .part file). This option only determines where Leech puts those files. Of course, this file is trashed when your download is completed anyways, but it’s nice to choose whether to see it or not. You can also choose to have anywhere from 1 to 9 active downloads at once, or unlimited. Leech gives you the most common three places to download to — Downloads, Desktop and Documents — or you can choose your own location.

The Feedback tab gives you a few options for the feedback that Leech will give you. A nice preference here is to choose what happens when you drag a URL to Leech’s icon in the dock. You can have it hide (same as command-h), retreat (simply not show the window) or activate (show the window). This way, you don’t even have to see the window to download something. The other options here are very simple.

Where Leech really excels is in its multiple download support. No, this is not downloading multiple things at once, this is giving Leech a list of URLs to download. Simply go to File-Open URLS (command-O), and it will give you a text field where you give it the URLs to download! This is really great for when you get a list of URLs that you need to download from an email or in an AIM chat.

Another cool feature of Leech is the ability to see your downloads’ progress in the Dock. The amount of white in the arrow of the icon changes based on how much of a file you have downloaded.

Leech, by Many Tricks, retails for only ⚬9.95 (compare this to other download managers). It may not have all the features of some of the rest, but it has all the features you need to download large files with speed (or slowness, because you can pause and resume downloads), style and simplicity. To me, it is well worth the buy.

Many Tricks has been very generous in giving MacApper 15 licenses to giveaway here! To enter, just comment with a feature you would like to see in Leech! The giveaway will end on June 3rd. Remember, if you don’t win, you can always buy a copy for only ⚬9.95!

*Now in version 1.1, it does

Back in February, we reviewed an application called Freeze Frame, from Elgebar Studios. A few days ago, a program by the name of Bokeh (which is replacing Freeze Frame) was released by Ollie Wagner and Geoff Pado. While we here at MacApper have have reviewed apps that cause a computer or a person to complete tasks faster, we have never reviewed an application that can do both. Bokeh is that program.

The premise behind Bokeh is similar to that of Freeze Frame. When you are working and you find that you have many applications fighting for processing power, clicking on one applications name will freeze that app, or clicking on “Focus” will freeze all apps except for the one currently active. Bokeh takes that a step further though, by also blurring the background when you focus on an app (hence the name ‘Bokeh’). When Bokeh is activated, it becomes easy to use any program without getting distracted. Whenever I write, I am always distracted by some of the silliest things going on in the background of my computer. Bokeh literally blurs out all of these distractions making it easy to accomplish the task at hand instead of getting distracted with unimportant ones. This app can give any program a distraction free environment. I guarantee you will find Bokeh useful in your daily computing.

Bokeh’s usability and functionality combines the features of many applications before it like CunningFox and WriteRoom. It sits in the computers menubar making sure that its user can do what he wishes in a timely matter. A great example of where Bokeh becomes useful, is when using powerhouse apps like Adobe Photoshop CS3. When a 3D filter is applied, the CPU usage percentage goes up 100 fold, and before now, there was no way to decrease the time spent on this process. According to benchmark testing, Adobe Photoshop CS3 can run as much as 12.9%+ with Bokeh.

While it is true that you can accomplish more with Bokeh, this program will also allow your computer to do more. Bokeh lets you essentially cut off an application from using any processing power until you restore it’s functionality. This app saves time when working with programs that steal the CPU for themselves. At most times during the day, I have open iTunes, Safari with several tabs, Photoshop, iChat, and Word. All of the programs enjoy hogging the CPU, so using Bokeh on the app I am using at the moment allows each program to act like it is the only one open. With this functionality, Bokeh allows older computers running Leopard to work faster than they were meant to work.

Bokeh works phenomenally with my work flow allowing me to accomplish things quicker. Now homework is a breeze without distractions, and Photoshop runs smoother than ever. I strongly suggest giving Bokeh a try no matter what your needs are. Furthermore, both Ollie Wagner and Geoff Pado have been generous enough to give us 10 licenses to give away to our devoted readers. For a license, please share with us what you would like to see added to this application and the winners will be selected randomly.

Some people have a hard time keeping track of where all their money goes. Cents, from MacMage, is a very simple application that helps you do just that! You can add different purchases to Cents and it will tell you how much you have spent. Cents is a very simple app, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.

To add purchases just click the menu bar icon. A list pops up with all your different purchases. On top of that list are two text boxes, one for the name and one for the price. After hitting Enter the new purchase will be added to the list. If you want to see your total spent just hover over the menu bar icon and a small bubble will show up under it displaying the total amount spent. Cents also includes a feature to export to another money management app like iBank and Cha-Ching.

So what if you already have a finance app? Cents is very simple and quick, no need to open up an application. Cents sits in the menu bar and uses 0% of the CPU. If you ever want to add the information to your other application you can just click preferences and then export. Cents is also great for people who don’t want something as big or expensive as iBank but just want a small application to easily keep track of some things.

The developers at MacMage already have future plans for Cents. Soon they plan on creating an iPhone and iPod Touch version that will allow syncing between the desktop and mobile versions. Try out the demo for Cents today. The full version is available for $4.99 from MacMage.

UPDATE:I forgot to mention that they had some licenses to giveaway! Post a comment to be entered in a random drawing for one of three licenses for Cents. The winners will be chosen next week.

My wife and I had been pretty happy with the copy of Quicken that came with our computers. All that changed a few weeks ago, when she told me that Quicken was no longer sufficient for our needs. As she is a professional accountant and I am just a writer, I didn’t question her. So started the search for a new finance program/service.

My first thought was to see if GnuCash had been ported to run natively on OS X, but unfortunately, it still requires X11 to run (apparently there is a way to do it, but it looks like it would probably require a significant investment of time, so that is out). We tried everything we could find, from Piggybank to the online service, Mint. Finally we tried iCash, from Maxprog, and she told me that it would do.

Upon starting the program for the first time, the first thing that I noticed was that it didn’t have the polished interface that I had gotten used to with Quicken. That isn’t to say that it isn’t functional or doesn’t work, but merely that it isn’t as sleek. After that, though, everything went pretty well. The processes of opening and closing accounts, adding and modifying transactions, and importing data are all fairly intuitive.

There are some things in iCash that we don’t like, such as how it handles contacts, but they are relatively minor, feeling more like lack of polish than anything, and I am certain that they will be fixed in future releases. In addition, there are a few quirks, such as grouping transactions instead of splitting them, that take some getting used to.

What iCash lacks in polish, it makes up for in flexibility. You can create an account for just about everything; where Quicken had issues with some of the assets that we were trying to set up, iCash just worked. It doesn’t try to force you to do things in a particular way, so you can organize your finances in whatever way is comfortable for you.

For people who want an alternative to Quicken that doesn’t feel dumbed down or who are looking for a program to track finances for a small business, iCash is a good choice. It has some quirks, but nothing that would cause me to hesitate in recommending it. In addition, there is an active help forum up on Maxprog’s web site, and the developer is very good about addressing questions.

Although iCash 4.3 is shareware and costs $39.90 to register, Maxprog has generously provided us with three licenses to give away to our readers! To enter, simply comment below with a suggestion for a feature that you would most like to see in this program. The winners will be announced next week.

There are currently many RSS applications out for Mac, but none of them are quite like Times. Times reinvents the user interface of an RSS reader by making it look similar to a newspaper. With a simple interface, Times makes it easy for anyone to read and view RSS feeds. It also has many special effects to make it look even better.

I’ll start with adding new feeds. To add a new website you can either click File-New Feed, Command-N, or click the plus arrow in the feed panel. If you have something on your clipboard it will automatically fill in most of the information. Once you have added some of your favorite sites you need to add them to one of your pages. You can have different pages to sort your news. Each page includes 3 main sections: a vertical bar on the right side, a horizontal bar on top, and a main area in the middle. To add a feed simply drag and drop the feed from the feed panel to a section of the page. To remove a feed you click the x icon in the corner, which only shows up when the feed panel is open.

Ok, so now you have all your pages set up and feeds in them. To switch pages simply click the name of the page on the bar on top. Then the current page slides away and reveals the other one. Reading feeds is very easy, too. If you click on one of the articles, the page peels back (or slides down) to reveal the full article. You can then scroll through the article or click the Read link at the bottom to open it in Safari. New articles in Times are marked with a small blue dot next to each article, and a red “New” badge is added to the dock icon. Then the pages with new feeds will have their titles in a blue font.

If you ever want to read articles that interest you, after looking through all of your new articles, you can add them to the shelf. To open the shelf just click the small black icon in the top right, next to the pencil, and a wooden shelf pops up on the bottom. Then you can drag articles straight from the main view onto the shelf. The shelf has space for 4 stacks of articles, and stacks work just like the ones on the dock in Mac OSX Leopard. When you mouse over a stack all the articles spring out and you can select one to view. In the application’s preferences you can change when the shelf automatically clears.

Times does a great job of changing the RSS reader. It is a major change compared to a normal RSS reader, and makes it even easier to use. Times is available today for $30 CAD from Acrylic Apps. But wait, there’s more! Dustin MacDonald was kind enough to give us 3 licenses to give away. Just post what you like about Times and any suggestions in the comments for your chance to win. Winners will be randomly selected on May 9.

There’s the interactive table version of soccer, called foosball. And then there are tons of soccer video and computer games that try to realistically imitate the sport. However, few computer games have attempted to emulate the look and feel of table soccer, but that’s exactly what’s been done with Master Kick. And there’s one really good reason why it might be a better alternative: a decent foosball table can cost more than $100, but you can get Master Kick free if you win MacApper’s giveaway.

It seems like every medium has tried to recreate the world’s most popular sport.

In the game, players choose from five teams representing cities around the world and from a list of arenas that include grass, mud, snow and indoor (the terrains are simply for aesthetics and don’t affect play in any way). Games can end either after five goals are scored or after three minutes, though it would be nice if you could set the game length. Finally, you can set your squad’s formation and the difficulty level of your computer opponent. Sadly, none of these options are saved after the application is closed, so you’ll have to reset them every time you play. Play modes include single match and a league mode, which is a nice idea but doesn’t save your stats or progress if you quit the app.

Anyone familiar with foosball or the sport of soccer should be able to instantly pick up and play Master Kick, and since the game supports nine languages, everybody can join in. You control a team of 11 virtual plastic men on four horizontally movable bars. The bars can be controlled using the mouse or the arrows, and shooting is done either by clicking the mouse button, pressing the control key or using the left or right arrow keys. You can hold down the shoot button to get a more powerful spin, and it designates which bar will shoot when the button is pressed by whichever is closest to the ball. Unlike actual foosball, all bars move together, meaning you can’t control them individually. If you’re playing with the keyboard, you’ll probably want to use the arrows to shoot instead of the control key, which doesn’t play well with Spaces on Leopard. There’s no option to customize the keyboard layout.

The relatively simple gameplay resembles a more advanced version of Pong, and its graphics are almost as outdated. The sprites, static terrain and cutely animated crowd gives Master Kick the look and feel of a Super Nintendo title. Its sound effects, like the ever present “hrah” crowd noise, are equally retro, which can be good if you appreciate the nostalgic feeling games like this offer. However, there’s no defending the incredibly annoying techno music that blasts while browsing the game menus. When I booted the app up for the first time and heard the hair raising theme song, I immediately quit out and curled into the fetal position. Fortunately, I found the volume slider buried away in the options menu, thus solving my most pressing concern. In testing, I ran into a bug that muffles any sound on your system that’s not generated by the Master Kick app when using an M-Audio sound interface, but it works fine using a MacBook’s built-in speakers or through the headphone port.

Developer Industry Entertainment’s first foray into Mac gaming is not bad but does have room for improvement. In the current version, Master Kick boots up in a small window with no option to resize or play in fullscreen, but fullscreen support is coming in the next version, says Nemanja Bondzulic, the game’s lead developer. Master Kick is only compatible with Intel Macs, but the next version should be a universal binary, Bondzulic says. Industry will also add local and network multiplayer supporting all platforms.

“All versions of the game are identical, even the mobile versions and they are [built] from the same code base,” Bondzulic says in an email. “Players using, for example, Palm and Mac will be able to play one against the other.”

Industry Entertainment has given MacApper four licenses to give to our readers! Three of the free licenses unlock the Mac version, and one works on all platforms, which also includes Windows, Linux, Windows Mobile and Palm OS 5. If you want to enter the giveaway, comment on this review with a feature you would like to see implemented in Master Kick, and mention if you would prefer the master license, stating which of the supported platforms you own. The giveaway will end on May 2nd. And remember, if you don’t win, the Mac version of Master Kick costs $19.95, while a full license unlocking all platforms costs $29.95.

It turns out that your comments and suggestions blew the developer’s mind. Ken from Hungry Seacow was so excited to have his mind blown that he sweetened the deal.
First, HSS decided to throw in two more licenses for the giveaway! This means that we have 5 winners instead of 3. Let me congratulate the following randomly selected winners:

Sarah (Yet another call for a menu planner to shopping list exporter)
Mark (Wants the Sloppy Seacow to sync with his iPhone. In fact an iPhone app would be nice.)
Corey (Likes tags, and wants YummySoup! to tag that recipe.
Gerald D (Has an unlimited SMS plan and would like to refer to his phone for his grocery list.)
Dave (Has a picky eater in the family. He wants to tag according to their quirks. Also, he would like a multi-tiered ratings system to accommodate each eater.)

A big “Thanks!” to all who participated.

And now for the surprise! For those of you who didn’t receive a free copy of YummySoup!, HSS is offering a 25% discount to MacApper readers. Purchase YummySoup! through this link, and your discount will be automatically applied to purchase price. This MacApper deal ends on April 27th.

You may want to gift a copy of YummySoup! for Mother’s day, or just spoil yourself with recipe organizational goodness. With a deal like this, I suggest you do both.

There are a fair amount of ways to do that, but I knew one that was much simpler and more Mac-like than the others: BetterZip.

BetterZip by MacItBetter retails for only $19.95, compared to $79.99 for a tool like Stuffit Deluxe, which doesn’t even have as many features as BetterZip. BetterZip can not only split files into pieces of a certain size, but it can also open archives without having to expand them and then extract only certain files! For someone like me who likes to archive his mail every year (about 100MB .zip file), this is perfect so I can see what mail is there and only extract a certain message. If you want to protect your files you can use up to 256 bits of encryption on your archives. It is the perfect piece of software for all your zipping and archiving in a flash!

BetterZip 1.6 has just been released, which includes a great new feature which directly extracts archives instead of opening a new window with its contents. In versions before this, it got annoying to have to click on “Extract” in the big window that popped up, so I’m glad that this has been fixed. It also helps for quick accessing of all files in an archive. You can turn this feature on or off in the general preferences if you don’t like it. Even when it is on you can open an archive in a window by holding down the Control and Command keys while the archive is opening with BetterZip.

Another feature of BetterZip, and new in 1.6, is instead of reading file extensions to get the format, it reads the data. Before, if you renamed a .zip into a .sit, it would try to decompress it as a .sit. When you did that, it would usually not decompress. BetterZip can also show hidden files in archives, so you can see every file that is being extracted onto your computer. But if you have the quick extraction feature on (as described above) it does not show you those files.

BetterZip also lets you choose which types of files are handled by the program. This made my switch from Stuffit much easier, so now every compressed file is opened with BetterZip. This feature is located in the “File Types” tab of the preferences. You can just click “Handle All” to handle all files, and “Handle None”, if for some reason you don’t want to handle files in BetterZip.

BetterZip is a great program for handling compressed files, extracting only certain files from archives and seeing all files in an archive, but it wouldn’t be complete without the BetterZip QuickLook generator. This plugin can be downloaded from their website. You just drag it to your QuickLook plugins folder, and when you use QuickLook on a file handled by BetterZip, you will see a list of the files in the archive! This is my total favorite feature of BetterZip, because it makes it so easy to quickly view all files of an archive. You don’t even have to open the file with BetterZip for this to work! It does not, however, save the folder (open or closed) states. So with archives that have many folders with many items, every time you view it in QuickLook the folders will be opened.

MacItBetter has very generously given MacApper 5 licenses to giveaway! If you want to enter the giveaway, just comment on this with one feature that you would like to see in BetterZip. The giveaway will end on April 25th. And remember, if you don’t win, BetterZip costs only $19.95.

Have you ever come up with a great domain name, and wanted to know if it's already taken? Ever wondered who owns Internet.com? Have you tried to figure out whom to contact about the spam you keep receiving? WhoIs Analyzer Pro improves on its command-line cousin, making domain lookups easy, fast, and more useful than before.

The WhoIs protocol provides a connection to databases with information on the owner of a domain name (yahoo.com), an IP address (66.94.234.13), or an autonomous system number, or ASN (26101). Back when computer networks were new and obscure, systems administrators used WhoIs as a way to look up and contact other sysadmins. But now that there are numerous registrars, all with their own databases of domains they've registered for clients, using only one WhoIs database may return no information at all, or not enough information to be of any use.

Enter WhoIs Analyzer Pro, from VOSTROM. With it, you can type in a domain name, an email address, an ASN, or an IP address, and the application will automatically locate the best database and return any information it finds. This feature, known as Smart/Automatic server selection, takes care of locating the best WhoIs server for you, and is one of the most unique features of this app. You can also pick a specific WhoIs server instead, if you want to view the information one registrar has compared to another.

The main application window is clean and straightforward: Type in the domain you’re looking for (1), and select a WhoIs server if you want (2), or just let WhoIs Analyzer Pro select the best server for you. When you start the search, you get basic info on the domain (3), then more in-depth info if it’s available (4). At the bottom of the screen, you can view a log of what WhoIs Analyzer Pro is doing (5).

In addition to the Smart server feature, you can also open multiple windows and submit multiple queries simultaneously. You can search for an email address, an ASN, or a URL in addition to the more common domain name/IP address search. Once you have found the results of your queries, you can print, email a pdf, or save the results in HTML format, all from within the application. And if that isn't reason enough to try the software, the company behind WhoIs Analyzer Pro, VOSTROM, develops solutions specifically to address network reliability and security issues. These guys know what they're doing!

I only found two minor cosmetic issues with the application, both of which should be fixed by the next release. First, right-clicking on the toolbar brought up a blank box in the middle of the screen, for some reason; left-clicking made it disappear (1). Second, the HTML file generated from Save Result contains some non-ASCII characters, which are easily removed with BBEdit (2)–and this does not happen when printing, emailing, or saving as a PDF, only when saving and viewing the HTML. Again, both of these minor appearance issues will be fixed by the next release, according to VOSTROM.

WhoIs Analyzer Pro can be downloaded from VOSTROM's WhoIs Analyzer website, and costs $24.95 (or if you act fast, you can still buy it from MacUpdate’s past promo link with a 20% discount). However, the generous folks at VOSTROM have offered TWO FREE LICENSES of WhoIs Analyzer Pro. Simply post a comment below with a URL, email address, IP address, or ASN that you looked up, and how the experience was for you — especially if you found out something surprising or unusual in the WhoIs information. Post between now and midnight on Tuesday, April 22nd for a chance to win!

Recently at MacApper, Emily did a comparison of YummySoup! and Connoisseur. Since HungrySeacow Software has given us three licenses to giveaway, I thought I would outline a few of my favorite things in YummySoup! with a video tribute.

One of the features that sold me on YummySoup! was the Automatic Import feature that supported the heavy hitters of online recipes. I’m not one to create a recipe, but I definitely know how to mooch. Thus, recipe management software that can automatically import is a must.

Also, I need importing from non-supported sites to be almost as easy as automatic. The AnySite Import feature does this magically with its vibrant colors with a sloppy Seacow watching my every move.

When I’m making dough, I do it angrily (usually). The full screen feature allows me to express myself with yeast and flour without MacBook Pro participation. If you’re using Leopard, Apple Remote integration is on it’s way, though not here yet.

Finally, the grocery list feature is something I would use if I cooked daily or even tri-weekly. Alas, I’ll be looking at this feature from afar for the time being, but you overachievers can enjoy it for me.
