CNET did a head-to-head comparison of the top six .mp3 players, looking into sound reproduction this time. And quite surprisingly, the iPod doesn't come out on top.
Audiophile MP3 players, by the numbers (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-6490_7-9968448-49.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1040_3-0-5).

I really do not like the other players overall from an interface point of view. I have messed with most of those and would take the iPod.
I have had wars with some Golden Ears and and the Specmanship crowd over the years.
Once I played a trick on some HIGH END GOLDEN EAR people who hated the McIntosh Preamp and flat out said the Marantz blew it away. What my friends did not know is I modded the Mcintosh and it sounded completely different. I had a FAKE switch sitting there that went no where. The wires disappeared behind the cabinet. When I switched to the Marantz, they all went, WOW, listen to that sound. I switched back to the McIntosh and they said horrible. Only thing they did not know is nothing was being switched. It was always the McIntosh. They turned RED when I showed then and never questioned me again! The McIntosh did sound better after all my mods, but their prejudice made them hear different when there was nothing to even hear!
Funny. I never go completely by numbers. I have always been impressed with the iPods sounds and interface. So was Stereophile Magazine also. They are Golden Ears and loved the iPod!
I have a close friend who was my witness to the above story. He had to leave the room as he almost lost it and blew my trick!
What is funny is, if it was not for it's not working with the Mac, the Zune is my 2nd favorite MP3 player.

Few on computer forums know this about me, but before that Ear problem I told you about, Audio was my life. I was into it just as much as I am now into computers. I worked at a fairly high end Audiophile store and was promoted to manager. I designed Tube Stereo Amps and Preamps and was a Audio Tech. After a while I designed my own guitar amps also. I was after a certain sound at lower volumes and I worked till I got that sound.

That's awesome. I think bobtomay is fairly difficult about the tech stuff he buys for setups. While I have always gone totally head over heels in a hifi store, I can't say I can tell the numbers apart.
It used to be easy: you'd look at the sound wave amplitude in KHz - I think? - and you could tell which amp had the widest spectrum then you'd combine with the distortion and you could make a sound judgement on the quality of the equipment. Now equalizers can come in and muddy the results and what your ear hears.
I used to buy all these hifi mags at one time. Now, apart from going nuts for the beauty of the finishes and the looks, I wouldn't know how to look at the specs anymore.
Our hifi system comes from France for the most part.

They have GMs running scared, and you will buy wow gold (www.ugamegold.com) learn to fear them as well! They go by the title "Master Monsters", and few have survived to tell their tale. I write this as a precaution for other adventures. In the event that something happens buy wow gold (www.ugamegold.com) to me, I hope that what I can pass on will help you to defeat what I could not. I barely made it buy wow gold (www.ugamegold.com) pass Deo without being caught - he was completely buy wow gold (www.ugamegold.com) hidden amongst the rocks and cacti of Nihal Desert.
