My old Windoze machine is sitting here next to me and my Mac formatting the drive. As soon as it's done, I'm going to install Ubuntu on it. I booted Ubuntu from the CD and most everything worked right out of the gate! I have to say I was quite impressed! That old PC might just become a secondary machine for me, again!

Sounds great John. I would do that here but my main PC is for Gaming so I guess I am stuck with Winderz!

Oh well!

Hello from my new Ubuntu machine! This sure is quite a bit different than Windoze but somewhat like OS-X! It took me a few hours to figure out how to get the wireless card to work but it is now connected to my Airport Extreme. From what I've seen so far, I'm going to be forced to learn something about Unix. But that's cool. That is something I've been wanting to learn. It also took me a bit to figure out how to set up my Gmail account using IMAP. But all is better now.

Do you like the GUI?

Yes, I do. It's a little more clumsy than Leopard, but I do like it.

To me this says it all about Windows. Hope this does not upset any Windows person. It's all in fun.

No windoze....how do you keep the wind and cold out. What do you hang the windows dressings around??

Let us know how you find Ubantu. I have a PC here that I need to load something onto.

Let us know how you find Ubantu. I have a PC here that I need to load something onto.Keep in mind this is my first experience with any form of Linux. It runs much better on that ol' laptop than XP ever did. It included most of the drivers for that machine. Out of the box, it has some similarities with OS-X (see image). It immediately notified me that there was an update to the wireless card. When I installed it, the wizard informed me I still needed the firmware and had it available for installation, as well. Ubuntu comes with everything you need for basic use including Firefox, Evolution (email, contacts & calendar), GIMP, OpenOffice, a variety of games and multimedia applications.

Overall, I really like it but wouldn't trade my Mac for it. I'll admit I'm thinking about using NeoOffice on my Mac instead of iWork so I can easily switch between the two laptops. One thing is sure: I'll never need the XP disk for that laptop ever again!

Kewl, John. It would seem Linux has come a long way.

I had seen a tech show about 10 years ago and it was a nightmare, everything done in a Terminal type window. The guy was installing a CD-ROM on his Linux computer... :scared:

Linux has come a long way. It's probably come even farther in the last year and 1/2. That's the last time I gave it a shot, right before I bought my first Mac. My windows machine hasn't even been booted up so far this year. Have someone that wants to buy it, but am afraid as soon as I sell it, I'll be running out to get another machine. At least it's a backup in case something happens to my MBP. Think I still have Mepis on it also.

Yeah having a backup machine is a good idea. You never know what could happen.

Haha, the first time I saw that I got a great kick out of it.

I prefer OS X, but I think this video is better

Hey John - thanks for that. Looks awesome. I might have a dabble this weekend if I get time.
