From the article:
Before you scoff at the notion of making records, consider that over the last few years, the format has made a big comeback, with sales skyrocketing and turntables moving off store shelves like they haven't in years.
Why? The reason is pure irony.
According to Jay Millar, the marketing and sales manager for United Record Pressing, it has everything to do with the emergence of Apple's oh-so-ubiquitous MP3 player.

We have over 700 vinyls here. We upgraded our turntable so we could still listen to them. Besides, not everything finds its way to the iTMS or ends up on CD.

I didn't grow up with phonographs, so I don't understand the appeal of the "sound." It's just fuzzy and scratchy to me.
Nostalgia I understand, but that's not one of the things I get nostalgic for. Just "Mmhmm, yeah, that was a cool technology."

Same reason that tube amps for guitars sound richer, warmer than transistor amps. A lot of info is lost in mpeg encoding. Purists can tell! Playing your iPod while mowing the lawn... maybe not so much!

I could say a lot on this subject but it would probably upset a few people.
I will just say that do remember, a Guitar Amp is making a sound. It's part of the sound and I do agree, I like the sounds from most Tube guitar amps better than most Solid State amps.
A Stereo system though is reproducing music, not trying to make a sound. It's supposed to reproduce that sound made by the Tube guitar amp as accurately as possible.
The LP's that impress me the most are the Direct To Disk ones done by Sheffield. Amazing sound.

I used to only buy my vinyls as Imports. I felt the press (pressing?) was better than what was made in North America.

Same here when I could afford them. I agree they did sound better.

Audio Geeks know that records sound better than anything else on the market.
Signal processing geeks tell me otherwise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist–Shannon_sampling_theorem). My non-golden ears seem to prefer CDs or AAC.

How big is your music collection?
If you get a network cable or firewire cable they can transfer from one mac to another, I believe its one of the first things your new Macbook will ask you.
