I need help selecting a good (and cheap) wireless router that has a built-in DSL modem. I am living with my grandparents and their router is constantly fluctuating between full strength and nothing at all. It's annoying as heck.
Any suggestions would be great,

First big question, any idea why the fluctuation? If there is a fluorescent ballast or a microwave or any number of interference sources a new router ain't gunna fix it. Second, do you need "N" speed?

The only thing next it is a really old laptop which is wired into the router. Right now its fine but I know it will drop soon. I do not need N speed but as much range as possible. Thanks Sherman!

Yeah, it is not the laptop. The "G" speeds share the same unlicensed band as cordless phones (2.4GHz).
Have you played with setting channels and the elusive "Robustness Interference"?

That would be my suggestion as well. Do a site survey with a tool like AirPort Radar (http://www.macwireless.com/html/support/airport_radar/index.php) to see if any other channels are being used by your neighbors. If it's not already enabled, be sure to enable SSID broadcast.

I changed the channel and so far so good. None of the other wireless networks in my area operated on channel 3 and yet channel 5 is working better. Strange. I'll keep you posted if it changes

Cool beans. You'd be amazed how many devices use the 2.4GHz band. When you change the channel, you're altering the frequency ever so slightly and a lot of times that will clear up interference issues.

WOW!
By putting this thread in the wrong section of the forums, you gave a mod a chance to move a thread!

YAY!

I'm not going to be much help, i'll just agree with everyone else.

The one router i've ever had, was by a cordless phone.
The router suffered a bit, signal wasn't as good but it was still great.

The phones however, went crazy with static. lol.
