I recently got an AppleTV and while podcasts are great I want to start wathiing some of my other content. Problem is most of this stuff is divx or avi from a Windows PC. I bought a copy of Roxios Crunch to solve this problem and the quality really is appalling when I converted an AVI into iTunes - like it was unwatchable.

Is anyone else out there doing this successfully?

Did you try Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/)? It now support AppleTV so give that a shot if Crunch is not performing as needed.

I just posted this program in another thread, but here it is again for you.

I personally use VisualHub for all my video conversion. It costs about $23 but it's completely worth it. It will convert from just about any format to just about any format. I used it to convert all my DVD rips from .avi to .mp4's for my iPod. It has full Apple TV support so it can convert your files for you with ease.

The only thing I've found a little buggy is the Xgrid support. The cool part is when it works I run my conversions late at night after everyone's left the building and cal pull together about 200 Ghz of processing power from all the machines. This is the only application I've found out there that truly utilizes Xgrid.

Here's some of the features from their site:

* Fast conversion from nearly every video format to iPod, PSP, DV, DVD, Tivo, AVI, MP4, WMV, MPEG and Flash.
* Convert any file in three steps. Click, drag, click.
* Fit up to 18 hours of video on one DVD. Play it in any standalone DVD player.
* Xgrid support. Use the power of every Mac on your network for batch encoding.
* QuickTime Pro or special plugins not required.
* DivX/XviD AVIs, all forms of MPEG video, and many other formats QuickTime struggles with are supported.
* Batch Processing of multiple files. Save in-place, or to a different folder.
* Very comprehensive Advanced panel to modify every aspect of encoding.
* Dynamic Preview - See results before beginning a long encode.
* Stitch multiple files together to combine videos.
* Highly detailed, informative Users Guide.
* Universal Binary for PowerPC and Intel Macs.
