Seems this is a bit of tough egg to crack but it's doable with some modern burning and conversion apps like Toast and Compressor. I just got an HD TV and because there is no programming in HD here in Asia I'm forced to whip up my own content. I really just want to see what HD looks like on my new TV...

This seems like a good starting point: http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/hd_dvds_on_sd_dvds_young.html

I was going to start off with some HD movie trailers from Apple. Has anyone actually tried this themselves?

No, I've not tried it, however i have plugged in my MacBook in with a mini-dvi connector, looks awesome with the trailers. So much detail!
I don't think you can use a standard DVD, due to the players being SD....But i'm no real expert on the subject!!!

No they need to be upscaled to HD The new ones and newer receivers will do this automatically.
