I'm sure most of you have heard of Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/)? You'll be hard pressed to find a better tool for converting video for your various devices. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best settings for converting my video collection for my AppleTV so I thought I would share what I gathered in the Handbrake forums (http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/) and share it here...
For AppleTV Handbrake recommends using the preset for AppleTV. I save my videos as .mp4 but I think that .MKV is also a very good choice and might result ina smaller file size with minimal loss to image quality. Can anyone comment on that? Anyways...
Encoder: x264 Main
Framerate: Same as Source
Bitrate: 2500 kbps
Quality: 60%
Check off '2 pass Encoding'
Check off Turbo first pass
Be prepared to queue up a few videos and wait a while. a dual layer DVD rip (DVD9) took about 1.5 hrs on my MacBook Pro. The result is a video identical to its DVD quality and a reasonable file size to boot.
Hope this help someone. Screenshot included.
