I saw a few good games posted over at TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/21/mac-gaming-on-the-cheap-our-favorite-low-cost-mac-games/) and thought it would be a good forum opener to construct a list of the good stuff for gamers. I will maintain this thread with worthy picks as I find them. Who can add some good ones?

I'm not trying to focus on the big commercial games we all know already (unless they are free), but rather the inexpensive/free ones:

SketchFighter 4000 (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/games/sketchfighter/) Alpha by Ambrosia Software. Cost: $19 US. Requirements: Mac OS 10.2 or later.

Quinn (http://simonhaertel.de/) by Simon Haertel. Cost: Free! Requirements: Mac OS 10.4.2

Glider Pro (http://homepage.mac.com/calhoun/Glider%20PRO.html) (Originally developed by Casady & Greene (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casady_&_Greene), ported to Mac OS X by John Calhoun, the game's original author). Cost: Free! Requirements: (Not listed, but it works on Mac OS 10.4).

Mummy Maze (http://www.popcap.com/gamepopup.php?theGame=mummymaze) by PopCap games. Cost: Play online for free, download the "deluxe" version for $14.95. Requirements: Mac OS 10.2.8 or better.

Pumpkin Games has made Alien Abduction (http://www.pumpkin-games.net/alien_abduction.php?) freeware. This retro game has you saving survivors from abduction by evil aliens. It’s a tribute to the arcade shooter Defender. Hat tip: thriftmac (http://www.thriftmac.com/alien-abduction-now-freeware).

Enemy Territory (http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=18598) is a first person shooter set in World War II. This FPS is a mod running on the Return To Castle Wolfenstein Engine (Quake3) which was released for free by id software.

Goban (http://www.sente.ch/software/goban/) is Clasic Go for Mac OS X. Cost: Free!

Tremulous (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/games/action_adventure/tremulous.html) is a free open source FPS which blends elements of an RTS game. Impressive graphics. Requirements: Mac OS X 10.1 or later.

OpenTTD (http://www.openttd.org/) is a very active open source project around the classic game Transport Tycoon Deluxe.

Many mac-centric games are not compelling not by design but simly because of supply and demand in the world dominated by windoze. This is where Apple Boot Camp shines.

I hope i am not diluting the purpose of this thread. In any case, the only game i have is Enigmo 2 (http://www.pangeasoft.net/enigmo2/) by Pangea Game and it costs $29.95.

Battle for Wesnoth (www.wesnoth.org/) has always been good in my books, plus it's free.

One for the list is Beyond the Red Line (http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/04/06/btrl/index.php) - a new free Battlestar Galactica space shooter based on the Freespace 2 engine. The main page is here (http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/).

The Mac demo is now available and the game should be finished soon. It looks great, although I haven't actually played yet.

I love Quinn!
Frenzic is also pretty cool.

I was looking for Frenzic but didn't find it. Sketch Fighter is awesome but requires some sort of learning curve for someone who doesn't play a lot of computer games. Quinn is amazing! This guy really knows how to take a simple game and transform it into an awesome Mac OS X experience.

I like those small games that I can quickly jump on and play for 10 mins or so. Games like quinn and enigmo. I tried Frenzic but it got too much for me :glare:
I usually play the free Backgammon game that came on the mac to begin with.

Just stumbled on Plasma Pong the other day. Fantastic game, looks incredible and in is a lot of fun despite it being pong. I highly recommend it and you have nothing to lose since it is free.

Another free game that I have been having fun with is Armagetron Advanced. It is the classic tron game but again it has great graphics and is a lot of fun.

If it works for you, Platypus is awesome.

Claymation side-scroller. (Unfortunately, the original developer signed away his rights and the folks who own the rights are incompetent, so it gets increasingly buggy.)

I reeeeaaaallly want to find a good version of Arkanoid. Every computer I have owned from waaaaay back had a version and it's got sentimental value to me to beat (it is freaking hard!) that game on a new computer. Anyone?

Oh -- not really legal but -- everyone should grab MacMAME. (MacMAME is legal, but getting ROMs legally is tricky.)

If you can find an Arkanoid ROM online somewhere you're set ;-)

MacMame rules and there is indeed an Arkanoid rom around. Get it now!

My current favorite free FPS on the Mac is Saurbraten (http://sauerbraten.org/)(Cube 2). Awesome online play and it's open source.

I just finished Fallout, am in the midst of Fallout 2 and have a pile of games on my shelf to play through. It is nice to revisit the classics: they are great, cheap, and run on almost any recent hardware. In my case a notebook runs them just fine.

Actually, I just submitted an article on the hidden games already installed in OS X. You can check out my post (http://www.v00.org/content/view/32/26/) on my personal site on how to access them.

Not too shabby, lots of classics like tetris, pong, snake, life, etc. Great time wasters and they're already there!
