View Full Version : DiskWarrior 4 (rev. 42) problem

I have been a DiskWarrior user since my OS 8-ish days and have always been very happy to use it in emergency situations. DW is IMO a must-have app for any Mac user.

I didn't have any problems (and still don't) with DiskWarrior 3 (rev.39) but it's slow and DiskWarrior 4 promised to be faster so I went ahead and bought it a few months ago.

At first, it was DiskWarrior 4 (rev.41) I got in the mail.

When I tried to boot from the CD, my iMac G5 would instantly kernel panic. I looked at the CD surface and it seemed like the burn surface had circular scratch marks that didn't look anything like what is usually visible on any CD or DVD media I had seen. So I thought it was a defective CD.

After talking with Alsoft Support, I gently washed it to see if it was just dirt of the surface making the Mac kernel panic. Nope, it was not. Then they recommended I burn another copy of the CD in case the copy would work better. Nope, still no joy. I tried unplugging all unnecessary peripherals before booting from the DW CD and again, it kernel panicked.

I then tried the DW disk on our 1 GHz G4 iBook and the iBook could not even see the DiskWarrior CD, even if I tried to load it through Apple's Disk Utility. I was now sure the CD was damaged and asked Alsoft for another DiskWarrior 4 CD to replace this one that didn't work at all.

In the meantime, DiskWarrior 4 had now been updated to rev. 42 which is the version I got a couple of weeks ago.

I tried it and this one makes my iMac kernel panic as well.

I am thinking here that it cannot be a software conflict because I boot from the DW CD and no matter which Startup Items I have installed, these do not interact with the boot up process.

I am thinking it could be a hardware conflict:
- I am using the new Apple Alu wired keyboard and the wireless Mighty Mouse: both did not come with my iMac. I will be trying soon to plug back in the original keyboard (which I absolutely hate) and the Mighty Mouse that came with my Mac in the hope that this would solve the kernel panic problem.
- Another possible culprit is I have third-party RAM installed so this could also be another variable in the equation and I might try pulling the extra stick out to see if the boot up from the DW CD is normal.

Other than that, I am at a loss here. My iMac meets system requirements (both hardware and OS X version - am using OS X Tiger 10.4.11) and cannot see what else could be a cause here.

Alsoft Support, when I first reported the kernel panics with DW (rev. 41) sounded surprised that I had problems, so it would look like this is a very rare occurrence.

Would you guys have any ideas? What do you think about this? Is there anything else I should try?

Thank you for your input. :)

Well I might test out my theory this weekend. But I don't like kernel panics at all...

Am kind of at a loss if the same thing is occurring on two different systems. I have not purchased, nor used DW as of yet. But, as I understand it, DW disks are system specific similar to the original OS disks.

I would say you are on the right track as far as the hardware.
Everything disconnected from the iMac - including cables, not just disconnecting external devices and leaving extra cables plugged in.

Find it hard to believe it could be the mouse or keyboard.
Think I would go to the RAM first, removing one stick at a time.

Good luck.

Am sure you've searched pretty thoroughly - I found nothing specifically matching your problem either.

Yeah I did look it up and the support staff sounded pretty surprised too when I first communicated with them. I think that they must have sets of possible configurations and that mine, an iMac G5 2.1 GHz with this new modern keyboard and the wireless Mighty Mouse PLUS the added RAM might be out of bounds for DW.

Don't et me wrong, this is a superb piece of software and in all my years of using it, this is the first time something like this happens.

Jeepers. Thinking of removing the added RAM... I might try it next week then. This weekend might be a bit short.

I hate kernel panics so much...

If it isn't broken don't fix it springs to mind with lots of software. Look at windoze and all those fixes patches and updates.
