Just a thread where people can come in and talk about off-topic things and get to know everyone better!

Some of you might recognize me from MF.

Howdy Ryan! Welcome to MacApper!

And what a cool idea, this thread! Are you keeping the bar for tonight? If so, I believe I'll have a beer, if you'd be so kind!

Ryan
05-21-2008, 03:27 PM
Sure thing, what kind would you like?

MacHeadCase
05-21-2008, 03:29 PM
Hmm

Ok dokay, I'd like a very cold Rousse Bitter from the microbrewery La Barberie (http://www.labarberie.com/). Extraordinary beer, all natural...

Ryan

Here 'ya go!

So, is school over for you and if not, when does it end exactly?

Ryan
05-21-2008, 04:34 PM
So, is school over for you and if not, when does it end exactly?

Well I have two more days this week, monday off next week and exams tuesday through thursday, then I'm done!

The exam schedule is great, so I'm excited about that.

MacHeadCase
05-21-2008, 04:37 PM
That indeed sounds like the ideal schedule. :)

You have anything planned for this summer?

Ryan
05-21-2008, 05:08 PM
Well, I plan to do a lot of hockey camps and open hockey sessions, but I don't really have much planed as far as trips.

Our exam schedule is pretty good, on tuesday and thursday we get there at 8:15 take our exam and leave at 10:30, and on wednesday we get there at 8:15 have our first exam til 10:30 have a huge break before our last exam which is from 1:00 to 3:15.

MacHeadCase
05-21-2008, 05:10 PM
Great schedule! That way you'll be able to rest between exams.

Ryan
05-21-2008, 05:13 PM
Haha, yup. Which will mean more studying!

MacHeadCase
05-21-2008, 05:20 PM

And you'll be this Super Duper Student! :w00t:

As much as it pains me to say, the wings. I'll be pulling for the Pens though!

iKitten

Yay! I was wondering who would start a "Bar & Grill" here.

(It wasn't gonna be me, 'cause I can be shy 'bout starting threads! )

I'm busy converting cassettes to MP3s (the hard way?) Today a friend of mine (a few years younger) asked why I don't just buy them from iTunes. Um, wish I could. Most of these cassettes are obscure artists from a time before compact discs existed!

Wow Kilted! Seems like summer is hard to kickstart over in Norway. We still have our cold-ish mornings here, last week we had an accidental 6C, but it gets warm in the day(in the 20s), the sun is blazing hot this time of year.

We did get a few rainy days in a row though. Good thing it was nice for the long weekend though or I would have rented those lenses for nothing. :)

And Ryan is our cool Bar&Grill starter guy! It was a terrific idea!

iKitten
05-22-2008, 09:56 AM
We're having a cold snap: it's only gonna reach 83f/28c today. ;)
A few days ago we had a four day stretch of over 100f.

Maybe I'll contact an admin, but I canNOT figure out how to make this site stop sending me emails about new posts in my subscribed threads. And, yes, for the hyper-conscientious types, I have unchecked every email option there is in User CP! (I have saved that sucker three times with my preferences.)

MacHeadCase
05-22-2008, 10:16 AM
That's a COLD spell for you guys? Pffffttt!

That's 'cuz the forum doesn't want you to forget about it. LOL

Nah teasing you. You did go check Quick Links -> Subscribed Treads -> View all Subscribed Threads -> click on Selected Threads and select from the drop down menu that appears Delete Subsctiption, right? (See screenie below)

That's the only thing I can see right now...

iKitten
05-22-2008, 10:18 AM
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want to unsubscribe! I just don't want emails telling me of new posts. :crying:

MacHeadCase
05-22-2008, 10:20 AM
Ohh... Well then maybe an admin would know how to set this up properly then.

I talked with Steven, he's pretty cool.

Actually, my last attempt with the User CP seems to have worked. I won't bug anybody else yet! :tongue_smilie:

And yes, for this time of year, it's a cold snap! I'm having to wear socks today. :bored:

MacHeadCase
05-22-2008, 10:26 AM
Sorry but... does not compute! LOL

Man whenever it reaches 20C +, it's summertime here.

Well ok, not exactly but you know those snow banks are embedded in our collective memory here and it does make us strange.

iKitten
05-22-2008, 10:32 AM
Ha, you probably never experienced 100-108f/38-42c up there in the Great White. Hence the lack of computation!?

Okay, yeah, edit while I'm replying.

But I have wondered how y'all can stay sane with the cold and snow!

Yeah, 60f is chilly for PA at this point. My grandparents live in the Allentown area.

Normal for those of us in the Valley of the Sun is hovering around 100f at the end of May.

An American Decided to write a book about famous churches around the world.
So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to Orlando , thinking that he
would start by working his way across the USA from South to North.
On his first day he was inside a church taking photographs when he noticed a
golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '$10,000 per call
.
The American, being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the
telephone was used for.
The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000
you could talk to God.
The American thanked the priest and went along his way
Next stop was in Atlanta . There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same
golden telephone with the same sign under it.
He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Orlando and he
asked a nearby nun what its purpose was.
She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for $10,000 he
could talk to God.
'O.K., thank you,' said the American ..
He then travelled all across America, Europe, England, Japan, New Zealand.
In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '$US10,000
per call' sign under it.
The American, decided to travel to Australia to see if Australians had the
same phone.
He arrived at the Gold Coast, in Australia and again, in the first church he
entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under
it read '40 cents per call.'
The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father,
I've traveled all over the world and I've seen this same golden telephone in
many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in all of
them price was $10,000 per call.
Why is it so cheap here?'
The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Australia now, son - it's a local
call'.
KEEP SMILING
If you are proud to be an Aussie pass this on!

When God created the world there was one country he sent extra time on to get it just right. He created many exotic animals, and wonderful deserts and landscapes with all manner of tress and plants to grow there.
One of the angels pointed out that he thought it unfair that God should use more time on this one country than the others.

So to compensate he created Austalians to live there

It'd be nice - but the owner is off today, and when she's gone - I'm the guy. Think 'I'm the guy' even when she's there.

Tried to talk her into letting me go to a 3 day seminar to learn how to do my job better last week. Didn't get past the second sentence. She just looked at me and responded, "What, are you going to 'teach' it".

Had a co-worker come into my office to ask a question - another one came by and asked what he was doing - His response, "Well, I came in to ask what time it is, and he's teaching me how to build a watch".

Think I need to start slackin' some? I'm gettin' too old for this.

MacHeadCase

How dumb is dumb?

Well, it's when you have a Yahoo! account to catch up and stay up to date with some newsgroup, namely the Terragen Yahoo! group. Then you find out you don't need to follow them this way anymore, they have started their own forum.

But the most important point is that you hear that Micro$oft really wants to buy Yahoo! even if they do it in a very inelegant way and that your only dealings with M$ is giving your email addie to friends that use Hotmail and that you immediately get spam emails each and every time right after doing so.

Then you read somewhere that M$ reserves the right to sell to third-party companies any email addie that finds its way in any Hotmail address book. And then you understand about the spam.

So you do the math and you think "Ok I'm ditching this Yahoo! account, I don't want to start getting any spam after M$ bullies its way into ownership".

So you unsubscribe.

Two weeks later, you try to log into your Flickr account...

Gah.

Question - how do you delete widgets? I have a growing number and need to do some surgury and remove some.

MacHeadCase
05-23-2008, 04:27 PM
As far as I know, there are two places you can find them.

Paths are:

Macintosh HD -> Users -> your user account -> Library -> Widgets

Or

Macintosh HD -> Library -> Widgets

You just drag them to the trash and empty the trash. As long as you quit Dashboard before as precaution though I guess.

MaDDoG
05-23-2008, 04:40 PM
I actually need to delete them from the dashboard screen and not the system as such.

MacHeadCase
05-23-2008, 04:46 PM
I actually need to delete them from the dashboard screen and not the system as such.

Oh well in that case... Click on Dashboard and once the widgets are all loaded, click on the little + (plus) sign in a black circle you see at the bottom left. This will make Xs appear in the upper left-hand corner of each widget that you have on your screen. You just click on that X to disable it.

MaDDoG
05-23-2008, 04:57 PM

Found a few restaurants with user ratings on line. Found one with 8 user reviews, all giving it 5 stars and has an online coupon for 15% off. And it's right next door to a Petsmart. Think it's meant to be. Haven't had any good Thai food since I moved up here, can't wait. :w00t:

I will be looking to bring on at least one moderator in the next week or two...so shoot me a PM if you are interested. What an afternoon. I bought 2 solid state hard drives for work. Bought them home to set them up (and fix a few normal hard drives that had died). Unpacked the first one and plugged it into the windoze machine I have using a ata to usb bridge. Wouldn't see it. Tried it on the mac - same result. Researched stuff downloaded programs and fiddled for about 4 hours and still nothing. I sat there looking at the other SSD thinking do I unwrap it or not. They were just over $500 each for a mere 16 Gb. Eventually I unpaked it and plugged it in. Windows went bing I see you wizards started and partitioning and formatting commenced perfectly. One drive was dead right out of the box. Grumble grumble grizzle grizzle. :cursing:

I have one like that at work which I can borrow if need be. Quite heavy compared to my lens.

How do you make those links MHC?

Ohh 3 stars.... you'll have a tiara soon

MacHeadCase
05-26-2008, 05:02 PM
I just click on the link icon and instead of leaving the link by default as text, I copy/paste the name of the webpage and add a bold tag to make it stand out. I've read somewhere that when you write in the name of the webpage as link, it's easier when you do a search after.

A tiara would ruin my hairdo, buddy. ;)

Stretch
05-26-2008, 05:09 PM
Yeah, MHC has it. I ordered the 70-200mm F4 L, along with the 50mm F1.8. It will be a huge upgrade from my current lens, the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II. Its a decent lens, but I have a feeling it will be nothing compared to the 70-200.

They'll get alot of use this summer.

Engineer vs. manager

A man is flying in a hot air balloon and realizes he is lost. He reduces
altitude and spots a lady on a field down below. He lowers the balloon further
and shouts: "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him
half an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The lady looks up and says: "You are in a hot air balloon, hovering
approximately 30 feet above a field at 42 degrees, 28 minutes and 11 seconds N.
latitude, and 118 degrees, 17 minutes and 43 seconds W. longitude."

"You must be an engineer" says the balloonist.

"I am" replies the lady. "How can you tell?"

"Well," says the balloonist, "although everything you have told me may be
technically correct, I have no idea what to make of your information and the
fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you haven't been much of a help and have only
cost me time."

The lady below says "You must be a manager then."

"I am," replies the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well", says the lady, "you don't know where you are, or where you are going.
You have made a promise which you have no idea how to keep. You got into your
present position through a lot of hot air and now you just drift along. You
expect people below you to solve your problems, but you can't even make sense of
simple data given to you. The fact is, you are in the exact same position you
were in before we met, but NOW it is somehow my fault."

Good evening. What a day it has been, loaded with most everything.

For instance, it seems my iPhone has decided to misbehave. If I buy a song on iTunes on my iPhone, it won't transfer back to my MacBook. After having spent a half hour on the phone with Apple iPhone support, I now have an appointment at the iPod bar at a local Apple Store. That's at 9AM. The lady on the phone suggested I'd probably be getting a new iPhone. That will be interesting, since I have a 4G iPhone (and they stopped making and selling them many months ago). It will be an interesting morning. (Fwiw, I've never messed with my iPhone. I've hacked Linux kernels, but I never cared for the idea of owning a $500 brick.)

Also on the Apple side, last night I created a bit of a large file on my MacBook. It's for a personal project. It's 16G with 207M records, plain text. One of the CPU cores was pegged on cycles while it was being created, and the fan was going at a steady 6200rpm during the process, which lasted about an hour and a half. High level managers at work have introduced me to outsiders (sponsors, partners) as the resident Mad Scientist. :w00t: Anyway, my little MacBook will earn its keep this summer, crunching away at the aforereferenced file and discarding records that are unnecessary. Theoretically what I'm trying to do is unprocessable on home equipment (2.14x10^16 algorithmic passes), but to me that's a challenge. I have my ways. :sneaky2: (Translated: I have a lot of code to write.)

In any case, it's all about having fun. It's late, ~11:45PM here. I'll be poking around the forum for a bit and then will retire for the night. Be good!

Work has been special today. I was booted from a brainstorming session earlier this afternoon. Yes. No joke. I'm still amused by it. For now. Actually, I guess it was more that I was voted "off the island" by a staff member, assuming that's the right expression. (I think it's from one of the reality programs.)

The brainstorming session was just three of us, one manager and two staff members, me and the person voting me out. When asked by the manager if I should stay, she stated she wasn't getting anything out of me being there so I left. I take no umbrage in this as she's a known problem. Additionally, she was rude and caustic to the manager throughout the meeting. It's her way.

It was special. I have lots of other work, and need not support her task any more if I wish. I have options. It's all economics, baby.

In a nutshell, she's a negative person. I'm supporting her task, and she didn't like that I was trying to solve problems she couldn't solve. If something doesn't fit her view of the world, it doesn't exist. Fine. Let her do the job by herself. Not my problem.

Anyway, it's about time to go to the Apple Store to try to get that problem solved. I'll be offline until later tonight probably. Will let you know how it goes with the iPhone then.

She's not worth my time.

Thanks! I think my iPhone is fine! I'm in the middle of a Time Machine backup, but things went very well in the store. The Genius created a new iTunes library (hold the option key while opening iTunes), did a little work, and all seemed fine. While there, I purchased a song via my iPhone and it transfered fine. The problem was apparently a corrupt file in my iTunes setup.

Frankly this turned out the best! While it might have been neat to get a new replacement iPhone, I knew the phone itself was fine. Why replace something that's not broken, even if they're offering? It wouldn't have been right.

Have fun tonight iKitten! So what are you folks doing for dinner? Mmmm... Okay I'm not hungry now, as I just finished eating a little while ago. But I *am* enjoying a good cup of coffee.

As for my cow-orker, she'll get everything she's earned. It seems we all do.

Always like fresh installs myself. Still an old Windows habit of mine. Will say, I can do about 5 times more installs and deletes than in Windows and still have a decent running system. Love that about OS X.

News from home

Dearest Redneck Son,

I'm writing this slow because I know you can't read fast. We don't live where we did when you left home. Your dad read in the newspaper that most accidents happen within 20 miles of your home, so we moved. I won't be able to send you the address because the last West Virginia family that lived here took the house numbers when they moved so they wouldn't have to change their address.

This place is really nice. It even has a washing machine. I'm not sure about it. I put a load of clothes in and pulled the chain. We haven't seen them since.

The weather isn't bad here. It only rained twice last week; the first time for three days, and the second time for four days.

About that coat you wanted me to send; your Uncle Billy Bob said it would be too heavy to send in the mail with the buttons on, so we cut them off and put them in the pockets.

Bubba locked his keys in the car yesterday. We were really worried because it took him two hours to get me and your father out.

Your sister had a baby this morning; but I haven't found out what it is yet, so I don't know if you are an aunt or uncle.

Uncle Bobby Ray fell into a whiskey vat last week. Some men tried to pull him out, but he fought them off and drowned. We had him cremated; he burned for three days.

Three of your friends went off a bridge in a pickup truck. Butch was driving. He rolled down the window and swam to safety. Your other two friends were in the back. They drowned because they couldn't get the tailgate down!

There isn't much more news at this time. Nothing much out of the normal has happened.

Your Favorite Aunt,
Mom

Oh I read about the employee discount alright! It's 20% off for a full system each year! And then if you buy more systems per year than just the one, it's 15% for the next purchase, then 10% for subsequent one, etc.

I could start my own store.

Watched the presentation M$ did of Windows 7 over at D6 (http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.php/archive/windows_7_multi_touch_desktop_os_demo_video/).

A couple of thoughts:

- Isn't the name Concierge already used by Apple in its Apple Stores? Welp M$ is using the name too in the next OS release
- The multitouch scrolling feature looks a lot like what can be done on the iPhone and iPod Touch
- Better not eat fries just prior to your using your WinBox...

Well, I think I really need IS. Alot of the images from my 70-200mm are blurry. I'll have to take a tripod with me whenever I use it. I just hand free hand it and get a good shot. Even at 1/400th its blurry. Hope the weather is nice out when I do use it.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. I personally would have shelled out the extra dough for the IS. Unless you have shutter speeds over 500th of a second, any infinitesimal shake of the camera will be exaggerated.

What made you decide on the lens without the IS?

Stretch
05-29-2008, 10:13 AM
It was only $550 brand new. The IS model was about $1200.

MacHeadCase
05-29-2008, 10:18 AM
Well it's well worth the diff, me thinks.

Besides, you can't buy a cheap tripod, they either become wobbly and unstable within a year's use, they're too light and prone to being destabilized or don't have enough adjustments so you can set yourself up properly. So a good tripod could easily go in the $250-300. More if you go for the good, lightweight carbon tripods like mine.

And... you can't use a tripod every time. If you need to take a shot quickly no time to set up a tripod or you might not have it with you when you need it.

Stretch
05-29-2008, 10:27 AM
Yeah, maybe I'll upgrade within the next year and get the IS model.

*Phew*

I finally am done with the sorting out of photos and conversions from RAW to .jpg.

For those of you who did not know, I rented last week two adorable Canon lenses, the Canon 100mm f2.8 macro and the Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS.

The trouble with using top quality lenses such as these is that you wind up with a lot of good photos. The quality of the glass changes everything: photos are tack sharp, colours are much more vibrant, less colour correction and Photoshop work, etc.

Since it always takes me a bit of time to get used to new lenses, I can't say I concentrated on image composition, so images are as is.

So the photos were taken at the Montreal Botanical Garden (http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/jardin/en/menu.htm) (we didn't go in the greenhouses, just took pictures of what was on the outside), Le Parc des Îles-de-Boucherville (http://www.sepaq.com/pq/bou/en/) just outside of Montreal and in the Biodôme de Montréal (http://www2.ville.montreal.qc.ca/biodome/site/site.php?langue=en) because that day it rained.

I divided the photos in four galleries:
- one for the 100mm f2.8 macro (http://MacHeadCase.smugmug.com/gallery/4996754_Z7dyD#299614679_kZ89R) lens (all photos were taken in the Botanical Garden)

- and for the 300mm lens:
• Botanical Garden (http://MacHeadCase.smugmug.com/gallery/5023859_2K3UQ#301809605_7gUXT)
• Îles-de-Boucherville (http://MacHeadCase.smugmug.com/gallery/5050935_xXWPq#302310691_eisjG)
• Biodôme de Montréal (http://MacHeadCase.smugmug.com/gallery/5050904_GALs9#303598624_KhfNT)

I hope you like them. :)

Some nice shots 'D'.

I love ferns anyway, a couple of those are great shots. Liked the parrots and the couple of the Toucan. Oh, and the turtle just climbing out of the water.

In the shots of the deer at the Îles-de-Boucherville, what are the blue colored things. Thought on the first shot they were tree trunks, then maybe a shot through wind chimes, but at the end just not sure.

And a new desktop background for me - check 'em out folks.
I appreciate all you folks with cameras.

Thank you for the kind words, bob!

The blue-green "stocking" kinda things are some young trees that were planted and the park is trying to protect them from the deer I think. The success rate isn't very high from what I could see. I know we had a very bad winter a couple of years ago: temps were freezing but very little snow on the ground to insulate young tree roots from freezing to death so my guess is that not much made it. But the park hasn't taken these "stockings" down yet.

And if you want a better rez in that image let me know your screen rez and I'll send you a good copy of the image so it isn't stretched out. It should look sharper and better, me thinks. :)

Had a fellow scouter contact me today, he saw my photos of Cedarlands from last summer. Apparently council decided to log Cedarlands without talking to anyone about it. The camp has practically be razed. Most of the trees are gone. Looks like they had the crews that eat the Amazon rainforest do it.
