There are rumours saying that Apple's service .Mac.com will be revamped and the name will also be changed.

John Gruber has an interesting article in which he gathers some evidence of the changes, me.com (http://daringfireball.net/2008/05/me):

“me.com (http://me.com/)” is currently a placeholder page hosted by MarkMonitor (http://www.markmonitor.com/), a company that specializes in brand-related DNS management. You can see that it’s handled by MarkMonitor by checking the whois information for the domain (http://who.is/whois-com/ip-address/me.com/). Apple uses MarkMonitor for most of its domains, including “apple.com” (http://www.who.is/domain_archive-com/apple.com/), and it’s where they’ve previously parked domains (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/14/macbook-air-domain-names/) for future use. ...

I really dunno... :scared:

I wonder what is going to be revamped in .Mac, though. I hope it's not all for the iPhone. We still don't have it here! Argh!

If I have to have an email address that ends in @me.com I will drop my account instantly! It sounds like a failed Microsoft project!

Well having an email account ending with .Me does sound pretty dinky. :glare:

.mac suits my surname perfectly. Makes me a Mac.mac...... I should think that Kilted would also be embarrassed at going from a Mac to a me given his love for all things Scottish.

Speaking of how I can't live without my dot Mac account, the entire dot Mac email system is down. (8:45 pm EDT)

Yeah mine is too and the .Mac homepage won't even load! :sneaky2:

I wanted to log in there to find out about the health of the service...

And indirectly, you did find out about the health of the service...

Oh, good, thought it was just me.
I was able to log in at the .mac site OK, but wouldn't give any info pertaining to the mail side of the account.

Yeah I did!

Are they changing the name tonight?

Ok it's back now... Jeepers.

Still says this on the .Mac homepage once you log in:

Members cannot access .Mac Mail.
Members cannot access the .Mac Welcome page. Service will be restored ASAP.

Oh good - same as Bob thought it was me. I installed entourage yesterday and decided again the I didn't like it and deleted it with AppZapper. Hasn't worked since and I thought I had changed a setting somewhere but darned if I could find any changes. Phew!!

Reporting in! Not to worry .mac faithful! Any address that you have with .mac including aliases will be safe and sound. They will continue to work. That means you need to scoop up any aliases that you might want, you are entitled to five. Any new accounts will be me me me. Yuck!

That page is taking forever to load, I suspect that there are a few people out there who are hoping that they won't get stuck with a email address that sounds like a failed Microsoft operating system. Or some discarded mini me joke from a cut scene out of Austin Powers...

Will I still be able to use my mac.com email address?
Yes. You may continue to use your current mac.com email address to send and receive email just as you do today. If you have any email aliases at mac.com, they will also continue to work.

MacHeadCase
06-09-2008, 02:32 PM
.MobileMe. Holy cow! Who came up with that stoopid name anyway? :glare:

Well from what I know, there is little that will change for someone like me who doesn't have an iPhone, an iPod Touch or needs to share with a WinBox.

At least my brainy aliases will stay put.

Sherman Homan

The idea of an email addy of MobileMe.com is just wrong! Is it an account with Mobile oil? Is is an adjective? A command? Is it a mumble? No likey! The dot mac addy at least had a professional caché to it. I am glad that it will continue to work. What brainy aliases did you score MHC? ;)

MacHeadCase
06-09-2008, 04:59 PM
Oh you know...

So how is this gonna work? Gonna have to send an email to everyone to let them know my email addie will now be usernameATMobileMe.com? And will have to mess with my Mail.app settings?

MobileMe? Mobile Oil?

Looks like your dot mac account will be safe for now. Send, receive; both will continue to be the regular old dot mac. There are some nice new features and the capacity has finally been increased.
It seems that only new accounts will be mini-me-you-complete-me MobileMe domain.
Grab your dot mac aliases soon, they will also work into the foreseeable future. Incidentally, I noticed that hockeyfan and curlinggirl were already taken, do you know anything about that, MHC?
:w00t:

MacHeadCase
06-09-2008, 05:36 PM
OH I'm a real champ at curling! Yep you should see me curl my fingers on this keyboard. Sometimes I can even curl them to pick up a pencil! :w00t:

Aliases are already up to the allowed five.

Oh that's true I forgot the storage capacity was hiked up to 20GB. Good point.

I'll MobileMyself now and shut up.

bobtomay
06-09-2008, 05:49 PM
How do ya set up alias addresses?

I can't find a place that'll let me do it.

MacHeadCase
06-09-2008, 05:58 PM
You have to log in your .Mac account via the .Mac webpage.

Then you click on the Mail tab at the top left and once in your email account, on the top right hand-side, you'll see Preferences. Click on it and you'll see tabs. The second one on the right is Aliases.

You're allowed up to five aliases per .Mac account.

Hope this helps. :)

bobtomay
06-09-2008, 06:09 PM
Yep, that got it.

Figured I'd make some before the change.

It let me create a bobtomay alias. Now, why wouldn't it let me use that back when I signed up for .mac?

And it won't let me make but 3 of them. If I pick something unavailable it gives me alternates. If I use one of the suggestions, it says Alias Exceeded.

MacHeadCase
06-09-2008, 06:13 PM
Hmm. I have five set up (which is the max). I do know that when you delete one you have to wait 24 hours to add a new one.

That's all I know so far. Why not contact .Mac Support? They're good and will reply to you. I once contacted them for a problem and they did get back to me.

thanks MD,I have just read that the e-mail addy change will be an option

MaDDoG
06-09-2008, 11:00 PM
so do I remain ....@mac.com??

bobtomay
06-10-2008, 03:31 AM
From the little I read last night you do. But you'll have the same e-mail on the ME side also.

Mail will continue as usual. But, if you want to use the ME address in Mail, you'll have to set it up as a separate account inside Mail.

They will also function as two separate users in iChat.

MacHeadCase
06-10-2008, 03:41 AM
Well this sounds like a short-term solution. Betcha we'll all have to migrate our email addies to mobileme.com or me.com eventually anyway. So I might do it when the name change is in effect.

MacHeadCase

Found this by reading closely Apple's FAQ.

Are any other .Mac features affected?
As part of this transition to MobileMe, some features are being discontinued: Web access to bookmarks (bookmark sync between your Macs and/or PCs is still supported), iCards, .Mac slides, and support for Mac OS X 10.3 Panther sync.

How do I get my bookmarks that I’ve stored on .Mac?
MobileMe will continue to sync bookmarks across computers as well as push them to your iPhone and iPod touch. However, after MobileMe goes live you will no longer be able to access the Bookmarks application on the web. If you have any bookmarks stored on .Mac, please be sure to sync your bookmarks with your Mac before this date to avoid losing them. For more information, please see this article.

Will my .Mac slides continue to work?
Pictures in the iDisk pictures folder will still appear in Screen Saver in System Preferences, but the .Mac slides publisher will be no longer be available.

Man I used iCards all the time.

Its probably coincidence but my .mac backup has not worked for 2 nights backing up my preferences etc.

MacHeadCase
06-11-2008, 03:56 AM
I backed up this Sunday and it worked. It didn't work as of Monday, you say?

Send an email to the support staff. There should be a way of contacting them on this webpage here (http://www.apple.com/support/dotmac/).

Update: there is talk that the iPhone carrier here will be both Rogers and Fido. Like I posted elsewhere (can't find that post for the life of me :bored: ), Rogers is very big in the western provinces but is practically non-existent here but Fido is pretty wide-spread.

So the iPhone will have both carriers.

Brown Study

Rogers and Fido (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fido_Solutions) are one and the same.

MacHeadCase
06-11-2008, 06:20 AM
Really? Oh my... That would explain why we rarely see the name Rogers over here.

Ohhh! Now that you mention it, I do vaguely recall news about a merger or buy out or something some time ago. Will read your link now. Thanks a bunch, Browny!

After thinking about it for a couple of days ... @me.com ... bites the big bullet. Really bad ... can't even tell ya how bad I think it is ... who's idea was this??? and who had the last say on it???

Maybe it'll grow on "me", but I doubt it.

The change of name shows the audience Apple is targeting. I can't see anyone with pretensions of being in any way serious using @me.com.

alberteinstein @me? pope @me? whitehouse @me?

I don't think so.

I did get back in and finally get my max of 5 aliases, so guess I can live with that.
