This was before my time as a computer user but this is just another example of how Apple is always ahead of its time. Apple Computer's eWorld - What AOL could have been (http://www.scottconverse.com/apple's_eworld.htm).

eWorld was Apple Computers attempt to create an online service to rival AOL back in early 1990's. I was head of development for what was at the time called AppleLink- Apple's internal online service used for internal email, file exchange, etc. and to communicate with Apple's communities of interest (developers, resellers, VARs, colleges, etc.). In 1991, After a series of 3 hour lunches with Peter Freidman at a local Italian restaurant, I convinced him he should join me in creating an online community for Apple Computer (as our director). Peter brought in James Isaacs, his right hand man. Together, with a lot of other very dedicated people, we created the concept of eWorld (Peter was our General Manager, James the financial wizard and product management guru and I was the R&D man who designed and created the actual product). Many very talented people joined us and when I left Apple in 1994, the group was up to several hundred people. ...

I had an account there! It was the kewlest of the kewl, except that there was no such thing as broadband and dialup connections were just unusable. Apple was too far ahead of the curve on eWorld and by the time faster connections made it more usable, Apple seemed to have lost interest.

Maybe Apple's disinterest was also fuelled by their financial situation in the late-mid 90s? Gil Amelio, it seemed to me, just didn't know what to do to correct the perilous situation Apple was in.

I had an account there!.....
So did I, but I can't recall the name I used. Remember the town square and the carved-from-wood-like figures of the population?

I can't recall whether I joined when I had my pizza-box LC or 6100 66 (I think it was). Dialup, anyway, but I never had a problem, as far as I can recall. Maybe it was too magic for me to care.

Maybe Apple's disinterest was also fuelled by their financial situation in the late-mid 90s?.....
As I recall, that was the reason Apple killed it.

Under his reign Apple came out with System 8 which had an even worse IP stack than System 7. Almost completely guaranteed that Macs got locked out of the corporate market.
