Life is funny sometimes... One of our cats was sick, like sick and where, do you ask, did he puke? On the router of course. Like we needed this...

Anyhow what we had was a Linksys Etherfast BEFSR41 (4 switch) and we'll have to get a replacement. The Linksys worked well apart from having to configure it online which was a drag but we set it up properly. We unfortunately forgot to put up the firewall against puke...

Well I'll stop being gross here but we saw CDW sell Netgear RP614 4-Port (http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=394596) Cable/DSL Web Safe Router with 10/100Mbps Switch for $46.

We also saw the Linksys BEFSX41-CA (http://www-ca.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=CAen%2FLayout&cid=1153781442761&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4276191966B05), prices vary but are a bit more expensive.

I do remember from the other place there are brands of routers that don't work very well with OS X. Like I think the Belkins? Anyway, am wondering if these models are some of those that work well? And which one would be best?

*Sigh*

Yuck! I wouldn't have even tried to clean it...
:scared:
Neither one of them thar routers are wireless, no need? I don't think you will run into any problems with Mac compatibility, in these days of modern times they are all fully cross-platform compatible and they all set up with a web browser.

I could go wireless but the old iBook G4 can't so we have to go wired. Thanks for the input Sherman. Will pass along. :)

Check out After the Mac for an inexpensive G speed USB wireless connector for the iBook:
http://afterthemac.com/
Most wireless routers have multiple ethernet ports built in, so you can do both, and when your laptop toting friends come over everyone can log in.

Whooh! OK we'll have a look at all this to take our decision. Thanks again. I'll get back in here with questions which could just very well appear. Me and networking, you know. ;)

I have worked with both of those you listed and would go with that Linksys. I own one in fact and used it 24 a day for 2 years. Only reason I took it out of service was to go WiFi.

If you do want to go with a WiFi router, the Linksys WRT54GL with the Linux Firmware is a VERY STABLE router. Mine has been up 2+ years and it's never once crashed or locked. The WRT54g and gs are not as good. It's not cheap but it's an excellent router.

How about the D-Link DI604UP (http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=650)?

Could this be a comparable and suitable product?

Lot of great features in that one, probably the most useful for you will be the ability to share a USB printer. Good choice!

Yeah because when we try to print from the iBook, my iMac has to be turned on. So me thinks we'll go with this one then!

Now I'll just put that on our cat Genji's tab.

He so owes us on that one... :glare:

Well we made a mistake last evening. Don't ever try to configure a new router thinking it'll go fast and easy. ON AN EMPTY STOMACH no less, right before dinner.

They're all web-based for configuring now? Anyway we musta zonked something over there, we were caught in limbo and couldn't connect to anything.

So e called the ISP and they were very nice and tried plenty of things with us for about 30 minutes *stomach grumbles* and it was quite obvious it was a router configuration problem.

So we tried some more things on our own *Stomach Grumbles* and still could not get anywhere.

So we got on the phone with D-Link *STOMACH GRUMBLES OMG I GOTTA EAT I'M GOING TO MUnCH ON THE COMPUTER DESK* got a ecorded message with stuff to try from here.

Unplug the modem from the electrical outlet and cable connection. Wait. Unplug from the electrical outlet and the modem the router and wait. Plug back in the modem, plug back in the router.

And that worked.
