As some of you know, I drive a truck. (I'm a company driver, not an owner operator ... thank God!) I pumped 162.11 gallons early this morning in Priceville, AL @ $4.78. That translates to $774.88! :scared:

OMG. Man you guys are in for some outrageous hikes in prices on everything!...
iBones
06-12-2008, 04:17 PM
Yep. The price of oil is causing everything to go up. It's the domino effect and I'm thinking we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg. I'm not going to be surprised at all to see $6/gal gasoline. Diesel is already over $5/gal in placers like California. And yes, John, the trucking industry is really in trouble, i.e., to the extent that they are going to pass the increase cost of doing business to everybody. What else can they do?
In Germany they're paying the equivalent of $9.00+ for a gallon of gasoline. Think about that for a minute. Sure people will tell you that the government is taxing gas more there and passing it back to the common people in the form of other benefits but I don't buy that for a second. It's $9.00+/gallon at the pump --- pure and simple.

Bettin' you guys don't leave your trucks idling while you go in to eat lunch any more.
How many miles you get on that?
JohnTheMacGeek
06-12-2008, 04:36 PM
Yes, trucking companies have no choice but to charge more ... a lot more ... for shipping and it trickles down (more like a flood these days!) from there. Now think about this: The company I work for has over 10,000 trucks. An average of 8,000 are out on the roads every day. Now do the math...
Per day: $61,990.40
Per year: $22,626,496.00
And keep in mind Alabama has some of the cheapest fuel in the nation. No company can eat those kinds of costs. and survive very long.

How many miles you get on that?Boy, you can't imagine how much they are emphasizing not idling when we're not in the trucks! Every day there's a new QualComm message about it. I average about 7.25 mpg which might sound low to most people. But it is actually quite good for a truck. I only haul cardboard boxes and those aren't the heaviest loads so that drastically helps my mpg.

In Quebec, Eleven gasoline companies face price-fixing charges (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080613.GASOLINE13/TPStory/?query=cartel).MONTREAL -- For conspiracy buffs, it's a welcome bit of evidence that price-fixing at the gas pump does exist, even if only at the local level.
The federal Competition Bureau has laid criminal charges against 13 individuals and 11 companies over allegations that they fixed retail gasoline prices in four Quebec markets: Victoriaville, Thetford Mines, Magog and Sherbrooke.
The watchdog is conducting other investigations elsewhere in Canada and more charges could be laid, said Competition Bureau commissioner Sheridan Scott. . . .

There was a consumer's rights show, JE on TVA, that showed, on 20 gas stations tested, that if you ask for 5 litres of gas, the amount is likely to:
- be in favour of the gas station on an overwhelming percentage
- and there are differences between those 5 litres of gas taken in those 20 gas stations.

Hmmm... unlike today we had gas lines back then. That one was the Arab Oil Embargo. Then we had gas lines with the oil crisis of 1978/79 along with price controls by then-President Jimmy Carter. While we don't have the gas lines today (thank goodness), the prices are out of control and destablizing.
Are we going to learn this time?

I'm thinking I'm stuck keeping my Tahoe. I'd take such a beating on a trade in it would be crazy. In fact for a lot of people who are panicking and going out and buying new fuel efficient cars I wonder if they have really done the math to see if it really makes sense. I think probably they haven't. By the time you get screwed on your present car's value, increase your car payments and extend the pay off period it doesn't seem the numbers would work most of the time. Going from 20 MPGH to 29 MPG hardly makes sense in the big picture. Maybe it works if your car is paid off but then you have to consider our new car payment. How much gas can yo guy for $20,000 anyway? Just food for thought.

My uncle recently traded in his '02 Explorer for a Taurus.
He got the explorer not too long ago, so it wasn't nearly paid off yet, which is good for him!
His payments are $100 less a month and it gets way better gas mileage.
You do have a good point iBones!
My aunt bought another car recently because she drives about 200 miles a day for work. Her '02 Windstar has a little under 300,000 miles on it.
Her new Cobalt is great on gas.

Of course everybody's situation is different. I'm just saying that folks need to run the numbers taking into consideration all the factors involved before they panic and go off buying new cars. The innovative theft (http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/06/thieves_get_creative_in_filchi.html) is just one sign of the uncertain times as prices for regular unleaded gasoline hover around $4 per gallon. Nationwide, stations are reporting rashes of drive-offs and thefts from underground storage tanks. Car owners have reported having gasoline siphoned from their vehicles and fuel tanks punctured and emptied.

This is all due to urban sprawl, this impossibility to use a bicycle. It is estimated that when you talk of the influence of Montreal as a city and its suburbs, it is said it reaches over 200 KM all around, sometimes more.
This means that for at least 200KM from Montreal, there are people that have to come to the city on a daily basis, drive to and from work.
It makes no sense to me that you're gonna drive for an hour or two just to go to work then drive for an hour or two to go home after work. And this is not counting the heaviness of traffic and standing still bumper to bumper for 45 minutes or more.

Ooops $6.38 per gallon here today.:thumbdown:We'll be there soon enough I'm afraid. I heard in Germany it's over US$9.00/gal.
On the other end of the scale check this out...
Chavez says Venezuela will not raise gas prices
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez says Venezuela has no plans to raise state-subsidized gasoline prices anytime soon.
Gasoline is cheaper in Venezuela than almost anywhere in the world, selling for as little as 12 cents a gallon.
Chavez on Friday pledged to maintain fuel subsidies as a matter of "sovereignty" for the oil-producing nation.
Gasoline prices haven't changed there for years, and many Venezuelans consider cheap gas a birthright. Hours-long traffic jams clog cities including Caracas, where fuel-guzzling sport-utility vehicles are common.

I'm gonna move to South America. I'd be able to fill my tank for under a dollar there.

My dad filled up our "soon to be mine" car yesterday. $38 even. Not bad I suppose, considering he fills up his truck for around $150. :o
I'm only 15, but I do remember when gas was $1.09 when I was a toddler. It's about $3.95 now.

I shouldn't be surprised that regular here is $4.59 per gal. Glad we rented a Suzuki Forenza. The gas mileage is great even though it drives like a glorified lawn mower and requires creative packing to hold our two weeks' luggage!

I just paid $3.89/gallon. Not as bad as some areas, I suppose, but that doesn't ease the pain on my wallet.

$4.44 a gallon with a costco discount. Without $4.51
I have a number of gas stations within 10 KM. 2 are Esso, a couple Huskys, and 3 shell stations. The Royal Dutch Shell stations are always about 3-5 cents cheaper than the rest. but still, that's about 1.25 a litre to 1.28, compared to the rest going past 1.30. the shells are getting cheaper and cheaper it seems, just because the rest are going 1.31, up to 1.37, but the Shell closest to me stays at 1.28. I like living by a Shell these days, although I don't drive it makes watching my dad fill up his 10 MPG Chevy Tahoe slightly less painful.

Cars left in car parks are being milked for petrol here now as a result of the price hikes. Even businesses that have tanks in the yard are being targeted by fuel thieves.

Oh joy --- gasoline seems to have leveled off around here at a bargain $4.30 for regular on average. The damn world is coming to an end.

It is Bones, in 3 days. That's when they turn on the particle accelerator in Europe, and everyone knows the earth will explode when they do.

Well, technically it won't explode. It will just create a black hole that will implode the Earth. For some very reassuring explanations about why this won't happen:

Nah, not the end. There's always madness in the world, and oil isn't the worst crisis we've faced. During the 1973/74 oil crisis however, it was the end of the world then too. We had enough oil for maybe 25 years. We had gas lines and the 55 mph speed limit. Gas prices nearly doubled from before the oil embargo until after.
We'll get through it. Of that I have little doubt. How we'll do it is another question, and I don't know the answer.

Apparently they're trying to lower the speed limit from 70 back to 55 to save gas. (At least in Michigan)

Our gas is abnormally plateauing. It's been at $1.37 for a while now. It's still decent to fill up my mom's accord at $65 but it's painful to fill up the Tahoe. I discouraged my dad from getting the tahoe as I predicted this would happen (this is when gas prices were somewhat sane). It's $140 to fill it. GET A NEW CAR, DAD.

It's getting BAD CHILDREN.
$4.25.
My mom puts $45 in her tank 2-3 times a week.
We're considering buying a 1998 hyundai accent from someone my mom knows.
If my dad would just get working on fixing the cars we HAVE, we wouldn't have to spend that $1500, but we did the math and buying that car will save us $50+ on gas a week.
